This residency took me away from the familiar, the known, and my usual “habits”. It also delivered me to a safe place to dwell, to find a more authentic involvement, a deeper level of engagement…. It’s not just about time, and it’s not just about the community of artists, rather it’s the historical weight and energy that makes this place what it is. The residency has provided the safe harbor to think and reflect, the space to conduct my research and execute work, and the positivity and support of an incredible staff to fuel my future.

“But I just felt, these

But I just felt, these evangelicals are out of bounds. They must be shown that diversity of opinion and practice is to be tolerated, that not everyone shares their values and that their values are not absolute.” As a southerner, I have to say: nothing get a southerner’s ire up rapidly as an outsider “sticking his nose where it don’t belong”… Taylor Van Horn would do well to know that “not everyone shares -his- values and that -his- values are NOT absolute”! In certain parts of America community standards still exist. Taylor Van Horn, as a visitor, does not have to agree with those standards, only respect them. Try to serve wine at his next opening in Saudi Arabia, and while you are at it, tell them how atrociously backwards they are making women wear bhurkas. We (America) are not currently held in high regard around the world. Why? For too many years our foreign policy demands political and social change from nations that cherish and prize their cultural, social, and yes, religious beliefs. If Republicans are in office we bomb them, if Democrats are in charge we sanction them. Who are we to pressure them to change their values? There are way to many people who are unoffended seeing a person wearing a shirt that says “F*CK”. Many of those people are in the group of too many people that are offended seeing “Baptist churches every half mile or so”. Who is Taylor Van Horn to presume to tell anyone their beliefs are myths and at best, of no value, and at worst, the province of intolerance, hypocracy, and sheer stupidity?? Wow - how f*cking enlightened is that?
