Assistant Curator | John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, WI)

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center seeks a dynamic, creative, knowledgeable, and highly organized individual to advance the Museum’s mission of generating a creative exchange between artists and the public.

In 2020, JMKAC will open a second facility, the Art Preserve, dedicated to the presentation and preservation of artist-built environments. The Art Preserve will house over 20,000 works of art in the Arts Center’s world-class collection of artist-built environments. Through its innovative design, the Art Preserve will provide curated and visible storage of art environment components while inviting a dynamic array of “responses” from contemporary, creative practitioners.

Reporting to the Senior Curator, the Assistant Curator will coordinate and manage logistics related to the reinstallation of the collection. This individual will also facilitate the inaugural series of site-specific responses and have the opportunity to curate select installations.

This individual will develop a rigorous research approach to the collection and will have a proven track record with a variety of research methodologies.

The candidate must be comfortable working within a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment, and must possess the skills necessary to think proactively and strategically.

Through a vibrant exhibitions schedule, the Arts Center explores original installation works, new genres, other contemporary forms, and the work of self-taught and folk artists. The Art Preserve will build on that legacy. All candidates for this position must have a broad understanding of contemporary art, and be engaged in conversations that expand the boundaries of art making. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of self-taught, artist-built environments, and innovative research practices.

Candidates for this position should possess a master’s degree in art history or a closely aligned field, and must have a minimum of two years curatorial experience. A background in critical writing and in-depth knowledge of contemporary art is essential. Experience working with museum collections is an asset. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks, and excellent time-management and problem-solving skills are requisite.

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and benefits package.

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, is one hour north of Milwaukee and two and a half hours from Chicago. The candidate must be willing to live in the region and have an understanding of art making in the Midwest.
