Executive Director | I-Park (East Haddam, CT)

We are seeking an inspirational, highly collaborative leader who will commit their skills and energies to the important work of nurturing the creative practices of highly talented artists who are powering the cultural vanguard. With generous, reliable operational and financial support from the board, the Executive Director (ED) will continue to professionalize and streamline operations without losing sight of the daily mission: helping to remove obstacles to the artists’ productivity, encouraging a healthy balance between solitary studio time and time for collegial exchanges – and safeguarding the artists’ privacy and tranquility, while providing for their physical comfort and safety.

The ED will commit to accelerating organizational development and to a smooth, respectful transition from a founder led culture, seventeen years in the making, that has facilitated almost 900 fully funded residencies, innovative programming and growing recognition within the field. In this transition, the board and ED will be aided by external resources to ensure that the ED position is empowered with an appropriate level of operational autonomy in the context of strategic board oversight. During, and beyond, this most exciting moment in the organization’s evolution, the ED will agree to sustain the values upon which I-Park was founded: kindness, attentiveness and authenticity.

Primary Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Board of Directors, and with both internal- and external-facing responsibilities, the ED will provide the expertise and direction necessary to fulfill the organization’s mission as we continue to grow. In this full-time position, the ED will:

• Manage all day-to-day operations including all financial and administrative functions, property and facilities maintenance, residency services and all related systems. Perform sound financial and operational management, monitor results on an ongoing basis and communicate appropriate details to the board in a timely manner.

• Provide wise, consistent leadership and supervision of all staff, interns and volunteers in support of organizational objectives. Recruit and hire high quality permanent and seasonal staff members. Develop and engage the staff and build a cohesive team. Proactively address staff concerns. Serve as primary liaison between staff members and the Board.

• Serve as the primary fundraiser, marketer, communicator and spokesperson for the organization. Expand revenue sources and develop key local, regional, national and international relationships to ensure long-term success. Develop and implement a sound donor relations strategy that yields balanced, sustainable funding. Maintain an accessible, welcoming presence within the community and pursue strategic collaboration opportunities that will help I-Park fulfill its mission while extending its cultural impact.

• Effectively manage the transition from the current Board-led management structure and devote quality time to strategic planning and implementation as well as Board recruitment and development.

• Working with the organization’s advisory Inter-Disciplinary Curatorial Panel, provide oversight of all I-Park programs to ensure programmatic excellence. Conduct ongoing program evaluation and implement enhancements. Establish and maintain positive relationships with I-Park fellows. Strive, collaboratively with the Board, staff and our artists-in-residence – to further enhance I-Park’s reputation for exceptional artists’ support, while providing clear vision and direction for all programs and initiatives.

• Oversee the creation and/or modification of all marketing materials, social media sites and the organization’s website. Establish meticulous quality control procedures to assure accuracy, consistency and high stylistic standards that are in harmony with the values of the organization. Identify and pursue new communication platforms.

About I-Park
The international artists-in-residence program at I-Park was founded in 2001 with the mission of nurturing artists and the creative process, in the fine arts and in nature.
Set within a 450-acre nature preserve, our program has sponsored almost 900 fully funded artists’ residencies since 2001 and built an outstanding reputation within the field. I-Park’s quiet, retreat-type environment allows artists to experiment with new ideas, do research and undertake aesthetic investigations while developing existing projects and starting new ones. I-Park’s rich, varied landscape has also inspired a special interest in site-responsive, environmental art, to which many of our artists have been drawn.

I-Park is both an open-air and a closed-studio laboratory for individual creative pursuits in the fields of music composition/sound art, the visual arts, creative writing, moving image and architecture/landscape design. From insights developed in the laboratory setting, it also develops and sponsors specially-themed cross-disciplinary projects of cultural significance, and brings these discoveries to light in the public domain.

I-Park is a truly stimulating environment in which to work and grow. Surrounded by an international mix of highly creative artists working in various disciplines, with all the fascinating daily challenges they serve up, and in the midst of a peaceful, though dynamic, landscape/artscape – you have the opportunity to fashion a virtuous blend of structure/competence and permissiveness. Creating this vibe is more art than science, but you will figure it out, with as much or as little support as you would like to call upon from the deep well of institutional knowledge and support that’s available to you.

Qualifications and Skills Required
• A four-year college degree is required, preferably in a related field
• A minimum of 5 years of directly related experience and responsibility, preferably within the non-profit arts sector
• A fundraising and development record that demonstrates an ability to meet increasing goals and demonstrated experience securing funds from foundations, corporations, government sources, individual donors and the general public
• Proven ability to effectively manage and motivate staff
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
• Proven success building effective relationships throughout the community: businesses, civic and educational institutions, community leaders and others
• Demonstrated financial management expertise
Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to effectively prioritize among competing deadlines and demands
• The position requires the ability to regularly navigate semi-rough natural terrain to access studios and installations and to address any issues that may arise on the expansive grounds.
