Something special happens in these places. At times I come with an empty slate; I cast aside every preconceived plan and just see what happens. In other instances I come with deadlines. Always I come away with something beyond what I could have imagined.

A Residency Just for Arts Administrators

Building an Escape from the Mainland at Mile Marker Zero

The Studios of Key West, an emerging creative community at America's Southernmost Point, is pioneering a new form of short-term residency intended for America's leading arts administrators, curators, producers, and cultural leaders. Furnished accommodations, bicycle, wi-fi, pool, private garden, and hospitality are provided for two weeks. This short-term residency also offers plenty of unique opportunities to connect with the island's history, Cuban heritage, and Caribbean vibe. Travel to and from Key West and food during the stay are the responsibility of the visiting resident.

Begun in late 2008, the Cultural Manager Residency has hosted leaders from the Chicago Art Institute, Djerassi, West Kortright Center, City of Madison, Americans for the Arts, Maine College of Art, and other institutions. The opportunity is available to professional colleagues in leadership positions with Alliance of Artists Community member organizations, including emerging programs and early-career staff.

The Cultural Manager Residency at The Studios of Key West is also presently inviting select creative practitioners, and others neglected by standard residency programs, to be our guest at the Southernmost Point. Residencies will accommodate music producers, television writers and directors, comedians, culinary figures, and others whose work involves advancing our culture and actively contributing to American creative identity.

"We're so new that we don't even have a mold to break," said Eric Holowacz, founding director of The Studios of Key West. "So instead, we set out to reinvent things from the get-go, innovate rapidly, and expand the idea of the arts organization as cultural conduit, co-producer, and collaborator. We have no fear of trying. And what better place to host a residency and get away from the American mainstream than right here at Mile Marker Zero!"
