c3:initiative | Working Library Residency 2018 Applications Now Open

The intention of the residency is to re-imagine the library and engage the public

c3:initiative (Portland, OR) is pleased to announce its second year of the c3: Working Library Residency. Born of the c3: Working Library incubator, c3 has since acquired the project permanently and will continue its programming into the future. Residents will activate Working Library on behalf of c3:initiative based on a set of Ambiguous Directions written by its founders. The residency fosters creatively-driven projects exploring the notion of the library as a site of production, collection, social engagement, and scholarship.

c3: WORKING LIBRARY OPEN CALL

c3 is accepting applications for 4+ week project proposals which seek to challenge and expand commonplace definitions of production, publication, archive and exhibition. The intention of the residency is to re-imagine the library and engage the public, as Working Library is to be imagined and constructed in part by you in conversation with the community.

Proposed projects could ask questions such as; What is the role of the library in the evolving contemporary art scene? How does publishing manifest as an art practice? How can a library serve as an archive of the commons, a social condenser, or a forum to debate our values? How can the library function as an inclusive and generative space for dialog and collective action? How can one engage and reposition the library’s systems and networks? What lives in a library other than books? How can research, ephemera, and experience manifest as material?

ACCEPTED RESIDENTS WILL RECEIVE
- Artist stipend of $1000
- 24/7 access to a 1500 sf shared storefront/studio space
- Staff support from c3:initiative in the form of marketing, communications, staffing events, as well as support in dialog with your project.
- Orientation to the space and neighborhood
- Free access to yoga at Shanti Om
