Piney Wood Atlas, a Publication Profiling Artist Residencies

[Piney Wood Atlas'] goal is to broaden the creative community while showing that the residency and the journey there can be an attainable, productive, and fun adventure.

Piney Wood Atlas is a residency research project by Alicia Toldi and Carolina Porras, who met in 2013 as artists in residence at Elsewhere Studios in Paonia, Colorado. The two are working to visit and catalogue “small, emerging, and unconventional artist residencies” throughout the country, and to compile this research into publications grouped by region. Their first publication profiles thirteen residencies in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California, beginning with Alliance of Artists Communities member The Growlery in San Francisco.

The publication includes information that will be useful for artists who are interested in attending residencies, as well as people who are looking for inspiration to start their own programs. According to the authors, the goal of the Atlas is to "broaden the creative community while showing that the residency and the journey there can be an attainable, productive, and fun adventure." And, filled with photos and illustrations by Toldi and Porras, Piney Wood Atlas is a work of art in its own right.

We look forward to future installments of the project. In the meantime, you can read a preview of the Northwest issue here and follow Porras and Toldi’s travels on their blog and Instagram.
