Jacob's Pillow Dance

The Jacob's Pillow Creative Development Residency Program supports the development and rehearsal of new dance repertory. This program serves as a signature of the Pillow's artistic focus and underscores its support for the expansion of the art form, for artists and audiences.


Becket, Massachusetts: United States

The Pillow is located in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts, three hours from New York City and two and a half hours from Boston, on 161 acres. The site is a National Historic Landmark and it has a rich, storied history.

  • Application type: Application not available (residency by nomination or invitation only)
  • Additional eligibility information: 

    By invitation only, artists create new work at the Pillow, which may or may not be performed at the Festival.

Facilities & Services

  • Housing: Private housing (individual apartment/cabin/house), Private bedroom in a shared housing facility
    Artists are provided free housing on site at the Derby farmhouse.
  • Meals: No meals/food provided
    Residents are responsible for their own meals; kitchen facilities onsite.
  • Computer/internet access: Computer and internet connection provided in common area (shared)
  • Companions: Spouses/partners allowed for full stay
  • Accessibility: housing/grounds/studios are accessible
    Studios and public areas are accessible.

Stipends / other support

Artists-in-residence have unlimited use of the Doris Duke Theatre and/or studio space, access to the Pillow's rare and extensive Archives, and other Pillow resources.

Additional expectations / opportunities

Artists-in-residence present an informal work-in-progress showing to conclude the residency. Creative Development Residencies have included Mark Morris and Yo-Yo Ma; Big Dance Theater; Zaccho Dance Theater; Kate Weare; Kyle Abraham, Camille Brown; Rashaun Mitchell; Suzanne Farrell; the Cambodian Project; Monica Bill Barnes; Chet Walker; and many others.
