The Josef & Anni Albers Foundation Residency

The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, located two hours northeast of New York City on seventy acres of wooded property in Bethany, Connecticut, maintains two residential studios for visiting artists. Residencies are typically two months long and take place throughout the year. Each studio is in an independent building equipped with a 400 sq/ft workspace with 16-ft ceilings, a kitchen, bath, and bedroom. There is no stipend. The residency is designed to provide time, space, and solitude, with the benefit of access to the Foundation’s archives and library. We will work with accepted artists to find a time that works both with our schedule and theirs. Artists working in any discipline are welcome to apply. No aesthetic connection to the Alberses' art is necessary, though applicants are encouraged to learn more about the lives and work of Josef and Anni Albers at albersfoundation.org.The mission of the Albers Foundation is to preserve and promote the achievements and the aesthetic and philosophical principles of Anni and Josef Albers, and to demonstrate the contemporaneity and continued relevance of their work and ideas. This mission is achieved through documentation, maintenance, and efforts to increase access to the Foundation’s substantial art collections and archive; a very active program of international exhibitions and scholarly publications; public lectures and participation in symposia, conferences, and other educational events; and hosting visiting school classes, community groups, and individuals. The Foundation’s programs are carried out in partnership with major museums and cultural institutions throughout the United States and abroad.
