Popps Packing Fall/Winter Residency

Popps Packing is a "laboratory for artists" - a grassroots neighborhood arts organization founded in 2009. Our mission is to create impactful arts programming and foster cultural exchange between local and international artist communities, while leveraging the unique features of our region, neighborhood, and personal practices. http://www.poppspacking.org/

Popps Packing offers residencies for emerging and mid-career artists interested in an immersive experience in Hamtramck and Detroit. Residencies are usually for 1-2 months.
Available Residency Programs for the Fall/ Winter 2018/19 are Popps Studio Residency and Guest House Residency and the SUSTAINABLE ARTS FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP/ Momm and Popp Residency For Parent Artists (September).

-POPPS STUDIO RESIDENCY is for or emerging and mid career visual artists with a studio based practice. Artists are provided a private room in a shared live/work environment. Popps founders and directors live above the residency space with their 2 children, 2 dogs and a cat. The first floor gallery, residency space (except private bedrooms)and workshop are communal spaces used by Popps’ extended family of neighboring artists and residents. In addition to the housing, studios and facilities offered here at Popps, we also connect residents to our large network of local artists, resources, and organizational and institutional partners through informal gatherings, open studios, exhibitions and performances. Artists are encourage to host some sort of public offering to our community.

POPPS GUEST HOUSE RESIDENCY is for artists who don’t necessarily need studio space (project, research, digital, film, etc.). The gust house is single family 2 bedroom home across the street form Popps HQ. Artists participating in the Guest House residency are provided a private bedroom with shared kitchen and bath. NOTE: the bathroom has an out-shower. STUDIO SPACE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR GUEST HOUSE RESIDENTS, BUT THERE IS A SMALL CLEAN BASEMENT AND PLENTY OF OUTDOOR, OPEN AIR SPACES.

SUSTAINABLE ARTS FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP / MOMM AND POPP RESIDENCY for parent artists
one, 1 month (September)residency to a parent artist with stipend, travel, childcare support and a residency intern.

With 3 structures and 7 lots our facilities offer artists many different environments to work in. In addition to the communal studios, we offer the various structures, gardens and empty lots around the Popps compound as sites for exploration. The abundance of land, raw materials and structures around Popps give artists many opportunities to realize ambitious site specific projects that could not be accomplished in a traditional studio environment.

Location

Hamtramck and Detroit, Michigan: United States

Popps Packing is nestled in a neighborhood along the northern Hamtramck / Detroit border. Hamtramck is a dense, 2.1 square mile, culturally diverse city within a city, almost entirely surrounded by Detroit. Hamtramck was originally settled by German farmers, followed by a flood of Polish immigrants in the early part of the 20th century. Over the past thirty years a large number of immigrants (Yemeni, Bengali, Armenian, Macedonian, Turkish, and Ukranian to name a few) have continued to move to Hamtramck, making it Michigan’s most internationally diverse city, as well as its densest.
