Tortuga Escondida Residency Center

Emerging Program member

Tortuga Escondida Residency Center proudly hosts the Akumal International Artists Residency (AIAR). We welcome emerging and established artists of all mediums to spend time creating, exchanging, enjoying the magic of beautiful Tulum.

Over the course of four weeks from October 23 - November 20, 2018, visiting artists immerse in the Caribbean environment dedicating the time to their practice, ideally with emphasis on a specific project or goal. The program is set up to engage with the community of Akumal through workshops, open studios, and other events. A final public exhibition concludes the residency, where participants share what they’ve created.

Every residency session one artist will be awarded a fellowship to Tortuga Escondida. The artist will be fully subsidized for The Akumal International Artists Residency. In exchange, Fellows create a project that specifically engages with and ideally enhances Akumal. A rotating selection of professional artists is invited each session to jury the fellowship open call.

Deadline for applications are August 1st.

The residency overlaps our first annual Festival de Artes, so that resident artists automatically have an opportunity to participate.

Our artists come from all over the world, across multiple disciplines. We love having performing artists, writers, and experimental artists as much as we do visual ones!

Akumal, Quintana Roo: Mexico

Tortuga Escondida Residency Center is dedicated to supporting scientific studies of our unique ecosystem, offering the exquisite inspiration of paradise within which artists create, and create a paradigm of wellness, integrating food, practitioners and healing arts. In the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, our geographic location is rampant with unique archaeological, cultural, and scientific significance. It holds incredible beauty. Tortuga Escondida Residency Center is nestled in the jungle; a hidden hacienda, green and tranquil. Immersed in nature, residents experience a myriad of flora and fauna; birds, insects, plants are more than abundant. A few kilometers east is the Caribbean Sea. The Mesoamerican Reef lines the shore; a major nesting grounds for endangered Green and Loggerhead turtles. Mangroves form the borderlands between sea and jungle. The world’s largest underground river system runs under our feet, flowing towards the sea.
