VAR Program

Emerging Program member

Each iteration of the VAR Program will include four international artists, writers and curators residing on the SS Vallejo houseboat at the same time. Each artist will be placed in a private living area and studio, and will have access to shared areas. Our eating and library areas are optimal spaces for interacting with other artists. Our community-oriented events - the SS Vallejo is also used as a venue for hosting cultural events, talks, live shows and exhibitions - will provide a chance to meet some of the prestigious local artists, creators and thinkers. As such, the VAR Program is suited to talented, curious, outgoing and community-minded artists, writers and curators.

2015 is the first year in which this residency will occur. Our aim is to design a program that provides a prolific environment where creative people can exchange innovative ideas, technical knowledge and produce new works.

We provide a cabin for each artist to live and create.
We also provide 24/7 full access to the rest of the premises: two kitchens, two bathrooms, a spacious hallroom and a top deck. The boat has free wifi connection and a free weekly delivery of organic vegetables and fruits for sharing.

We do not provide the artists with any monetary support. We help artists apply for funding with their respective governmental departments if necessary.

Sausalito, California: United States

Our residency is in Sausalito, California in a 136 years old houseboat called the SS Vallejo. The SS Vallejo previously served as a passenger ferry in Portland, Oregon, in the late 19th century, and in Vallejo, California, for the first half of the 20th century.
