Vermont Performance Lab

Emerging Program member

Vermont Performance Lab (VPL) is a new type of performance incubator located in rural southeastern Vermont. VPL was created in 2006 with a mission to support the development of new performance works and to connect creation and presentation of contemporary performance with residents of the communities we serve.

VPL’s innovative Lab Program provides a new resource in the performing arts field for regional and national artists to focus on the creative process in relation to community; opportunities for collaborative research with scholars, students, local experts and community members; access to state-of-the-art dance and recording studios, community spaces and non-traditional performance sites; and support and facilities for choreographer-composer collaboration.

Each year the Lab Program supports six to ten artist/projects through artist residencies that support various stages of the creative arc from research and development to fully realized productions.

SEED Program

Now in its third year, the SEED Program is VPL's offering to help strengthen our local dance ecology. SEED is designed for Vermont-based professional artists working in dance, who are seeking to develop new small scale performance projects for regional touring. Artists selected for SEED receive a commissioning fee, a week-long residency at VPL culminating in a work-in-progress presentation of their new work, a travel stipend and housing, and project management consultations with VPL’s Director. We welcome applications for projects of any type, but this year we are especially interested in projects with a water theme, as we launch The Confluence Project, a collaborative project with an environmental focus that will develop creative avenues for community participation around the study and protection of Vermont’s watersheds.
