Write On, Door County

We welcome applications from emerging and established writers in any contemporary literary genre. Applications are also accepted from literary arts administrators who need time away to envision a new program, edit materials, or find renewal for their own creative work.

Residents must be at least 21 years of age. Applications from students currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program are welcome.

Residents who need to travel with children or other family members are eligible to apply, though there may be some restrictions on accommodations.

Previous residents are encouraged to apply again. Your former residency neither helps nor hurts your current application.

Fish Creek, Wisconsin: United States

Write On, Door County provides a place of solitude and reflection on nearly 40 acres of woods, orchards, and meadows nestled between the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. We are located in the heart of Door County, Wisconsin's northeastern peninsula, between the villages of Egg Harbor and Fish Creek. Door County is a narrow finger of a peninsula, thirteen miles across at it widest point, less than two miles at its most narrow point, and 70 miles long. The county has 300 miles of shoreline, five state parks, 11 lighthouses, and more than 100 art galleries, museums, and performing arts venues. Strings of small waterfront villages are nestled in among orchards, woods, farms, and protected open land areas. The year-round population of Door County is 28,000, with the highest population (9,100) located in the city of Sturgeon Bay. The nearest major city and airport is Green Bay, approximately 70 miles southwest of Write On.

Past Residents & Quotes

This was the perfect place -- far enough away from my home base to avoid distraction, but connected enough to have video chats with my director. My claimed alcove in the upper room was quiet, warm, and productive. I also wrote poems inspired by the bronze and clay work at the Juddville Clay Studio just down the street. Your support makes this literary art possible -- it helps support progress and it offers the aesthetic setting that nurtures good work. I am so grateful for this time. You meet a real need.
— Anne Marie Oomen, memoirist, playwright, and poet, author of Love, Sex, and 4H
