Communications Director 

Full-time / Permanent

Art Omi seeks a Director of Communications. This position is responsible for developing and implementing an engaging, multichannel communications strategy that ensures Art Omi’s programs and work reach the broadest possible audience. The Communications Director oversees all aspects of Art Omi’s public relations and marketing operations, and cultivates consistent and clear messaging across a variety of platforms, including newsletters, website and social media, marketing collateral, publications, signage, fundraising appeals, and advertising materials.

At Art Omi, the Communications Director plays a key role in synthesizing multifaceted and overlapping programs, working closely with the visitor services, exhibitions, residency, education, and development departments. This position serves as Art Omi’s primary media contact, and works to establish visibility for programs and exhibitions in both regional and national outlets. The Communications Director also coordinates Art Omi’s program documentation, template, collateral, and earned media archives. A sensitivity to, and respect for, artistic and cultural diversity is essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively across the organization. 

This position manages communications staff, and coordinates external vendor relationships that support communications activities. The Communications Director reports to the Co-Executive Directors.

About Art Omi

Situated on 120 acres in the Hudson Valley, Art Omi presents the works of contemporary artists and architects, and offers a range of large-scale works in nature, plus a 1,500 square foot gallery. The Sculpture & Architecture Park currently offers more than 60 works by artists and architects on view. Additionally, Art Omi has five distinct residency programs (Art Omi: Architecture, Art Omi: Artists; Art Omi: Dance; Art Omi: Music; and Art Omi: Writers), and a thriving education program, serving people of all ages with contemporary art and ideas in a stimulating and dynamic community.  

Major Areas of Responsibility 

Branding & Design
  • Ensure consistency of voice, look, and feel throughout all of Art Omi’s communications and marketing materials.
  • Oversee design and production of collateral, including maps, postcards, brochures, rack cards, signage, and advertising materials for print and web outlets. 
  • Coordinate design and production of staff apparel and merchandise for sale at the Sculpture & Architecture Park and online. 
Marketing & Public Relations
  • Implement a cohesive messaging strategy across Art Omi’s website, social media, and other channels.
  • Develop content strategy for Art Omi’s website and social media accounts. 
  • Maintain and expand Art Omi’s media list and relationships. 
  • Write and distribute press releases to local, regional and national media, and handle requests for photos and interviews.
  • Act as a liaison for Art Omi in the community, media, and at events. 
  • Oversee advertising campaigns, including ad buys and design. 
  • Maintain contact lists and develop content strategy for e-newsletters and e-blasts. 
Program Support 
  • Coordinate and contribute to the documentation of events and exhibitions. 
  • Maintain a photo library and design templates for print, e-newsletter and website. 
  • Develop signage and collateral for Sculpture & Architecture Park and gallery exhibitions, as well as other public events and programs.
  • Support fundraising events through promotion, collateral, and documentation. 
Administrative
  • Develop and oversee the annual communications budget.
  • Support executive communications, including speech writing, annual reports and board presentations. 
  • Develop scripts and training materials for staff. 
  • Support residency program application open calls through marketing and coordination with program staff.
  • Identify and work with outside vendors for communications related work, such as video projects, program documentation, and graphic design.
  • Support Development initiatives including annual appeals, membership program, and grant applications.
  • Implement strategic improvements for visitor experience and data collection throughout the park and visitors center. 
  • Measure and evaluate success of events, mailings, and outreach against goals (e.g. applicants to residency programs, attendees at events, growth of social media audience, etc.). 

Qualifications

A successful candidate will have:

  • At least 2-4 years of communications and marketing experience, preferably in a non-profit and / or arts organization. 
  • Superior writing, editing, and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience managing social media, email marketing platforms (MailChimp), CRMs, and websites. 
  • Strong computer skills, including mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud, Google Workspace, and common office softwares. 
  • Highly organized, with strong management and planning skills with ability to manage multiple overlapping deadlines. 
  • A team player who can also work independently, or demonstrate leadership when needed. 
  • A background or strong interest in contemporary art, architecture, literature, and / or performing arts. 
  • Design, video, and photography experience are a plus.

Work Environment

What follows is a general description of expectations for the work environment. We are open to making modifications to support people of all abilities whenever feasible. 

This position is 40 hours per week, with an opportunity to conduct some work remotely.  Work takes place primarily indoors, encompassing typical professional office operations and equipment, with the exception of events, some of which take place outdoors in Art Omi’s Sculpture & Architecture Park. The candidate must be able to work some weekends and evenings onsite, or at Art Omi related events, to assist in the implementation of documentation. This position is within a fast-paced, energetic, environment with long stationary periods. The Benenson Center is an ADA accessible building.

Schedule & Compensation 

  • 40 hours per week including some weekends, evenings, and key events. Some remote work is possible. 
  • $55,000 - $60,000 per year, dependent on experience.
