The ART-14 Residency, in conjunction with the L.a. Studio community’s art outreach and programming, was founded in 2023 as a haven for artists looking for a comfortable, collaborative, and creative space to explore their art and concentrate on their projects, while our local community simultaneously benefits from the activity at L.a. Studio.

We are located in the renovated St. Mary’s School building (constructed in 1912), which features 12-foot high ceilings and large 7-foot windows, with plenty of natural daylight and spacious workspaces for various artistic disciplines. Artists have 24h access to designated studio spaces including ceramics, stained glass, woodworking, and 3D printing/laser engraving equipment, as well as tons of open studio space for painting, sculpting, writing/composing, research, recording, and whatever else our artists can dream. Residents reside in newly renovated apartments conveniently located above the studios, on the second floor. Zero Foot Hills (ZFH) is a residence on a rural property for artists to live, rest, think, and create, with a focus on natural spaces and materials.

The artist residency program at Artscape Gibraltar Point, has invited artists from all over North America and the world to explore their creative practice in a community setting on on Mnisiing (Toronto Islands) in the former Toronto Island Public and Natural Science School. The residency offers participants, not only the opportunity to work without distraction on various projects but to further build and develop their personal and professional networks. Residents create artworks through media of their choice, such as photography, writing, video, installation, drawing, painting, performance art, new media etc.

Artscape Gibraltar Point opened in 1999 on Toronto Island in Canada. Over the years, this four-season arts and cultural facility, has hosted thousands of locally, regionally and internationally recognized artists. More than 300 artists a year from across the globe experiment and create art through self-directed and thematic residencies hosted in our overnight accommodations. In addition to hosting a maximum of twenty visiting artists at any given time, fifteen long-term artist work studios provide space for a range of painters, sculptors, musicians, filmmakers and a recording studio – all of whom contribute to the unique and collaborative atmosphere at Artscape Gibraltar Point.

We provide accepted artists with space and time to create new work without the interruptions of normal life and with the bonus of healthy meals. During each residency, we host visiting artist presentations as well as resident "show & tells" -- both are dessert potlucks.

Our program welcomes emerging, mid-career, and established visual artists who are interested in an immersive experience in Detroit and Hamtramck. All studio based practices are welcome but our resources and spaces best accommodate sculptors, installation artists, architectural and landscape based projects as well as photo, film and research projects. 

Individual residency fees range from  $700-$9000/month and include a private bedroom in a 2 bedroom loft style warehouse space with shared onsite studio, kitchen and bath. Also included is access to the Popps workshops and gardens with resident chickens, a mobile sauna and various outdoor spaces to explore installations, interventions, research and more. Residency periods are 2 weeks - 2 months. Collaborative projects and collectives are welcome (cost varies).

Popps Packing is an active space and hosts occasional community events, exhibitions, dinners, volunteer opportunities and more. It is not a retreat (although it may feel like one at times). Artists are encouraged to share their work with the community via artist talk, open studio, workshop, screening or other public facing program of their choosing.

The Popps Packing residency program was born in 2012 and has grown into a robust international AIR that has welcomed over 100 artists into our unique arts and community ecosystem. Popps Packing is a 4,500 Sq/ft former meat packing plant on the Hamtramck/Detroit border, a densely populated, diverse, working class community.

This week-long residency for Minnesota parent-artists offers the opportunity for single parent artists and artists who wish to bring their spouse/partner and 1-2 children. The residency enables these artists to focus on their work while the child/ren enjoy age-appropriate, supervised activities onsite and in town. Daytime youth activities are supervised by a childcare professional for a portion of the days.

Artists must:

• Identify as a parent artist
• Reside in the state of Minnesota
• Children must be between the ages of 6-13
