Harbor Cottage #10

Nantucket Island School of Design and the Arts

NISDA’s Artist Residency Community welcomes emerging and professional artists and educators in all fields including, but not limited to, the studio arts in photography, painting, ceramics, textiles, sculptural site installations as well as, writing, music, performance and any alternative projects committed to the creative process. NISDA provides the setting to work independently, at your own pace utilizing Nantucket's dynamic environment, it's cultural community and NISDA's facilities. The residency is an on-your-own, self-structured experience that provides time & climate for personal renewal. Residents live in NISDA’s Harbor Cottages in Nantucket Town. You may work in your cottage, at the studios at NISDA’s SeaView Farm (for an additional fee, located 8 miles from the cottages) or in the Nantucket landscape. Artists in Residence who wish, are welcome to attend lecture series or ongoing classes during July and August.

Location

Nantucket, Massachusetts: United States

NISDA's Artist Residency Colony at Harbor Cottages is located at 71 Washington St. in historic Nantucket Town, on the harbor across from the Kayak beach. Seaview Farm Studios are located at 23 Wauwinet Road, 8 miles from the colony. An island 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Nantucket is a small island approximately 3.5 by 14.5 miles which was formed by the receding glacial waters of the last ice age (14,000 years ago). The island has 80 miles of accessible beach, over 350 species of sea and song birds, rolling heath lands covered in native wildflowers and ground cover and hidden forests.

Past Residents & Quotes

"The NISDA residency has been a fantastic opportunity for my work. I'm a plein air painter and Nantucket has so many ideal settings for this type of practice. I find the environment of this residency to be very conducive to productivity as well as the development of new ideas in my work. The Nantucket artist community is vibrant, open and supportive. Larry and Kathy, the stewards of NISDA are not only welcoming and fantastic hosts, they also facilitate introductions between myself and other artists at NISDA or those who live on the island. The NISDA residencies are located conveniently to downtown and I take a walk every evening downtown to unwind from a day of painting. Kathy and Larry coordinate a fantastic summer schedule of classes, guest speakers and art events, adding yet another facet to their wonderful program."
