Flame x Estudio Inverso invites contemporary visual, digital, and sound artists to apply for our intensive one-month residency in Madrid, Spain. This self-funded opportunity is designed for independent creators or those securing institutional mobility grants (such as Arts Council England or Culture Moves Europe).
Our program offers a unique dual-location urban concept:
- Live in Malasaña: Stay in a private room within a secure, fully furnished shared 2-bedroom apartment in Madrid’s trendiest historic city center.
- Work in Carabanchel: Enjoy 24/7 access to a dedicated studio space (16m²–20m²) inside our newly renovated 320m² industrial warehouse—the epicenter of Madrid's underground art movement.
The Space & Community
Work alongside 13 open studios under an "open walls" concept designed for cross-pollination. The facility features 3.3m ceilings, an active front exhibition space, a communal roof terrace, a kitchenette, and an on-site recording studio available for sound artists via separate booking.
Visibility & Outcome
Founded by a team with extensive experience running prominent London art NGOs (Ugly Duck, Chromart.org), we actively promote your practice to our strong local network. The residency concludes with a public Open Studio showcase, bringing local curators, collectors, and artists directly to your workspace.

Application Information
We actively look for open-minded, collaborative, and independent artists who will genuinely thrive inside an energetic, communal "open walls" studio environment where fellow residents are concurrently producing work. Our resident artists are supported by a deeply kind, sociable, and hands-on management team. Beyond the studio walls, we hope our residents will appreciate true immersion in Madrid's rich architectural heritage: our accommodation is located in a beautifully authentic, traditional Madrid corrala building, featuring a charming apartment with loft-style ceilings (buhardilla) situated just steps from the absolute center of the city. Tolerance, mutual respect, and diversity are not just corporate buzzwords for us—they are deeply ingrained in the very fabric of our everyday studio culture, with many of our permanent studio members identifying as part of the LGBTQI+ community. We warmly welcome applicants from all backgrounds, identities, and expressions who wish to contribute positively to this inclusive, supportive, and vibrant creative community.
The total fee for the one-month residency is €2,000 (Net amount; Spanish VAT/IVA is not applicable). This comprehensive fee is itemized as €1,200 for residential accommodation and €800 for studio space rental.
What is Included:
- Accommodation: A private bedroom inside a secure, fully furnished shared 2-bedroom apartment with loft-style ceilings (buhardilla) in a traditional corrala building in central Malasaña.
- Workspace: A dedicated 16m²–20m² workspace with 24/7 access within our 320m² open-studio warehouse in Carabanchel.
- Overhead Costs: All standard utility bills (electricity, water) and high-speed Wi-Fi are fully covered across both locations.
- Promotion & Showcase: Full integration into our local marketing campaigns, dedicated social media features, and inclusion in the end-of-month public Open Studio exhibition.
What is Excluded:
- Travel expenses to and from Madrid, daily catering, personal art supplies, and project-specific tools or structural maintenance.
Payment & Grant Support Schedule:
To secure a residency slot, a 50% deposit (€1,000) is due immediately upon signing the residency agreement. The remaining 50% balance (€1,000) must be settled in full one month prior to the official residency start date. Because our team has extensive experience running art NGOs internationally, we fully support grant-seeking artists. Upon formal acceptance, we immediately issue an official, itemized Letter of Invitation to assist the artist in securing external mobility funding (such as Arts Council England, Culture Moves Europe, or national cultural bursaries) to cover these fees.
