Associated Residency Program

Kala's residency program serves over 170 artists annually. Artists-in-Residence share space, equipment, techniques, and ideas, and are a vital part of the Kala community. Artists receive 24/7 access to a shared 8,000-square-foot Print Studio, equipment, digital lab, black and white darkroom, and 3 individual artist project spaces (150-400 sq feet available to visiting artists). Kala offers subsidized contract residency rates for different working needs and artist experiences!

International, national, and local artists producing innovative work in printmaking, photography, digital media, film and video, sound, animation, media art installation, and book arts are encouraged to apply.

Kala welcomes 170+ artists-in-residence over the course of a year to work at Kala. We offer a variety of residency rates for different working needs and artist experiences! All residencies are highly subsidized and are made possible through generous grants and donations from foundations and individuals.

Kala offers two shared artist apartments a block from Kala. Each apartment is a 2-bedroom unit, meaning you will have your own bedroom and be living with 1 roommate and sharing a kitchen, living room, and bathroom.

3.5-Week Residency with Kala Housing: $1,700 total per person. Full-time residency w/ small project space and Kala’s shared artist apartment are available to artists who reside outside the Bay Area.

2-Week Residency with Kala Housing: $1400 total per person. Full-time residency w/ small project space and Kala’s artist apartment are available to artists who reside outside the Bay Area.

1, 2, or 3-Month Part-Time Residency: $340 per month
3 days per week access; no housing is included in this option.

1, 2, or 3-Month Full-Time Residency: $490 per month
4 to 7 days per week access; no housing is included in this option.

6-Month Part-Time Residency: $260 per month
3 days per week access is available to artists-in-residence who have completed 3 months of residency; no housing is included in this option.

6-Month Contract – Full Time Residency: $420 per month
4 to 7 days per week access is available to artists-in-residence who have completed 3 months of residency; no housing is included in this option.

12-Month Part-Time Residency: $2,760 per year ($230/month). Up to 3 days per week of access is available to artists-in-residence who have completed the initial residency contract. This is a one-time annual payment (can be split into two installments); no housing is included in this option.

Collaborative Residencies: For artists working collaboratively, we have created a 1+ residency rate, which is 1.5x the 1-person rate:

1, 2, or 3-Month Collaborative: $510 per month for 3 days per week; $705 per month for up to 7 days per week; no housing is included in this option.

6-Month Collaborative: $390 per month up to 3 days per week; $630 per month for up to 7 days per week; no housing is included in this option.

Emerging Artists-in-Residence: For artists who have graduated from a BA, BFA, or MFA program in the last 24 months, Kala offers a discounted residency rate to artists for one year after graduation. Emerging artists receive a 10% discount on all residency rates, including 3.5-week and 2-week sessions with Kala Housing.

Senior Artists-in-Residence
Artists (65+ years of age) will receive a 10% discount per month on all residency rates.
