Atlantic Center for the Arts Residency #199 - Featuring Bob Faust, Chase Hall, and Larry Mitchell

Atlantic Center for the Arts offers an immersive, inter-disciplinary, tuition-free residency with artists only paying for room and board. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

The three-week Residency Program brings together “Mentoring Artists” from different disciplines, such as the visual arts (painting, sculpture, photography, film/video, and multimedia), architecture, music (composition and performance), literature, choreography, dance, performance art, and theater. Each Mentoring Artist determines the requirements and basic structure of their residency, and through an online application process, they each may select up to eight “Associate Artists” to participate in the three-week program. The essence of the program is to provide a collegial environment for artists of all disciplines where they can engage in meaningful interaction and stimulating discussions, while pursuing individual or group projects. It is an ideal setting for the exchange of ideas, the inspiration for new work, and the cross-fertilization of disciplines. The programs can include formal classes, discussions, individual meetings, individual and group critiques, collaboration, and studio time. The award-winning Leeper Studio Complex provides residents with resources such as a painting studio, sculpture studio, digital media studio, dance studio, music/recording studio, writers’ studio, black box theatre and library.

Bob Faust, Mentoring Artist-
Artist and designer Bob Faust crafts work with typography at its core and viscerality on its surface, and is the principle and creative director of Faust, a cultural branding studio, for over 30 years. He makes his work with purpose first—to inform, empower and/or instigate in the service and celebration of human difference. Text, patterns, and the ideas of surprise and discovery emerge as throughlines throughout his conceptual art practice that defies categorization and genre. In addition to his own work, Faust is also the professional and personal partner of artist Nick Cave. Together they founded the non-for-profit Facility: a multi-use creative space in Chicago that seeks to build community and change the world through art and design. Faust has been recognized nationally and internationally for his inimitable creativity through many prestigious honors including a University of Illinois, College of Fine & Applied Arts, 2022 Distinguished Legacy Award and City of Chicago, 2022 Mayor’s Medal of Honor. Exhibitions have included Mass MoCA BY The Numb3r5 (Mass MoCA), For And Nor But Or Yet So (Poetry Foundation), WA/ONDER (167 Green), with all, and still… (The Peninsula Chicago), Rapt on the Mile (The Magnificent Mile Association), Ways and Means (Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and The Chicago Transit Authority), About Face: Stonewall, Revolt and New Queer Art (Wrightwood 659), Great Ideas of Humanity: Out of the Container (Chicago Design Museum), gu lty / nnocent (MASS MoCA); Unfolded: Made with Paper (Chicago Design Museum), Betweens (Riverside Arts Center), and CHGO DSGN (Chicago Cultural Center). He has also received recognition from The New York Times, Fast Company, the Chicago Tribune, Newcity, NBC 5 News, the Chicago Sun-Times, CBS Evening News, and T: The New York Times Style Magazine.

Residency Statement:

As a cohort of purpose-led makers, we will discuss the many crossovers and differences between art and design. We will identify how our individual practices exist and work on that spectrum. We will discuss existing projects and projects in the making, push meaning, connect materials, explore aesthetics, and increase impact. The best candidate for this residency would be either an artist looking to amplify the impact of their work’s purpose or a designer looking to use their purpose centered process to make art. I realize most of you are likely both artist and designer, but that there is a special fuel inside this fluidity that can be tapped into with deeper understanding.
This will be a low key, but very intentional residency.

There are no prerequisites required.

Application Requirements:

Candidates should provide a short bio, CV and work samples, as well as a letter of interest as to why they are responding to the above residency description. Specifically addressing what they hope to take back to their studio, or how they hope to leave the residency more prepared to move their practice forward.

Chase Hall, Mentoring Artist
Chase Hall (b. 1993, St. Paul, Minnesota) explores the shifting lines between personal and generational narratives through paintings that merge autobiography with broader systems of power. Using brewed coffee to stain cotton supports, Hall creates a distinct material language that reflects on global histories of oppression, trade, and resilience. His works reveal the social layers of American life and highlight the vivid presence of Black experience beyond stereotypes, blending hieroglyphic symbols and expressive gestures to trace how nature, history, and imagination intertwine.

Hall was the subject of a solo exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, GA in 2023. In 2022, Hall was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in New York to produce alarge-scale artwork, the monumental diptych Medea Act I & II, for its opera house. Residency Statement:
Social Impact through Visual Arts
As we each navigate and struggle through the current landscape, our role as artist gives us the unique opportunity to express ourselves and address broader social issues with our skills and talents—we have a voice and the means to express it in ways others can't.

Though there will be group discussions and individual studio visits, the experience will also be informed by the artists participating and the environment we create.

Application Requirements:
• CV/Resumé
• Samples of your work (jpg, png, or pdf)
• A statement about what you will be working on and what you hope to accomplish while in residency.
