OBRAS is an international artist residency offering artists and researchers time, space, and solitude for sustained, self-directed work. Located near the village of Évoramonte in Portugal’s Alentejo region, the residency supports work that is evolving, exploratory, or unresolved.

OBRAS—a Portuguese word meaning work in progress—is built around the active condition of making. Residents are given space and time to focus on their practice without prescribed outcomes or formal program requirements. Each resident determines the direction and pace of their stay.

Artists live and work alongside a small international group while maintaining the independence necessary for concentrated practice. Opportunities to share work exist informally through conversations, artist talks, shared meals, and twice-yearly open studios, though participation is never required.

The property includes traditional Portuguese buildings, independent cottages, and studios spread across the landscape. Surrounded by agricultural land, marble quarries, and cork groves, OBRAS supports serious work without pressure to produce or perform.
