The Sable Project Summer Residencies
The Sable Project started with a forested piece of land near a mountain called Sable and an idea to bring creative people together in order to grow food and make art.
We built an Artist Residency Program for artists across disciplines that is off-grid, environmentally engaged, grounded by physical work, and collaborative. It is designed to foster creativity by removing some of the obstacles that keep artists from creating- space, time, and supplies- while providing new influences in an inspiring environment. Each season is unique and each residency experience evolves through the input of everyone present. More details on Sable Residencies.
Our Summer Artist Residency is for adult artists of all ages and disciplines seeking space, time, and a place to focus on their art. We are specifically looking for artists confident in their creative processes, comfortable living in community, and willing to camp out for the duration of their stay.
Sable is off-the-grid! We live in the woods in Vermont’s Green Mountains. There is no electricity or wifi. We invite Artists to depart from their often hyper-connected routines in order to engage deeply with their surroundings and cultivate a community of care with one another.

Sable's Application Process
Before applying, please read about our programs and The Sable Project as a whole on the rest of our website. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our offerings!
About Sable's Summer Residencies
Residency Fee & Deposit: $500 for 10 days. This fee contributes to the cost of food, general supplies, and infrastructure provided during your residency. If accepted, you will be asked to send a $150 non-refundable deposit (which will count towards your residency fee) along with your final commitment.
It is important to us that Sable is accessible to all! No one will be turned away if you can't afford our residency fee. Financial aid is given to artists who apply and are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Financial need has no relationship to acceptance, so artists are welcome to initiate this conversation once they are accepted. Please contact us at apply@thesableproject.org if you have questions about financial aid.
Sable’s BIPOC Artist Fund offers scholarships for Summer Artists and Guest Artists in Residence. If you are Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Color, you are eligible for a small scholarship! Make sure to check the box on the application.
Accessibility
Our location - up a hill (small mountain), on a dirt road, with uneven ground, and partly forested - is inherently a difficult location to provide the best accessibility to all individuals. That said, we are currently looking for ways to improve in this regard and are happy to help accommodate anyone in any way we can. Please read our Accessibility page to get a sense for what Sable has to offer.
You can find more details about our various Sable Structures here.
Please be in direct communication with The Sable Team to let us know your accessibility needs!
Housing & Accomodation
Our residents have the entire Sable Land as their playground/studio for the duration of their stay!
Communal spaces include a kitchen, bathhouse with toilet and shower, a large outdoor stage with a roof, and four small artist studios.
Sable provides tent platforms but artists are expected to bring their own tent and outdoor gear. 4 tent platforms are on a main relatively level packed-dirt path. The rest are tucked in the woods or on the hill.
The kitchen, bathhouse, and two of the studios have ramps. The rest of the structures have stairs or are located on a steep hill.
All of Sable is off-grid without electricity or wifi.
Studio & Facilities
Sable is a uniquely community-oriented residency. All of our studio spaces are communally shared, and artists get to know and connect deeply with the other members of their cohort.
Our studios are also largely outdoors!
