Foundation House, located in back country Greenwich, CT, opens its doors for 10 days to six residents, allowing residents the time and space for concentrated creation in beautiful and inspiring surroundings. Foundation House’s mission as a non profit center for learning is to focus on health, wellness, the environment, and social justice.
GENETO ART FOUNDATION invites artists from around the world to apply for its Artist-in-Residence Program in Kyoto, Japan.
The program offers selected artists the opportunity to live and create in Kyoto for up to 60 days, providing time, space, and cultural immersion for the development of new work.
Our residency encourages artists to engage with Japanese culture, history, architecture, spirituality, and local communities as part of their creative research and practice.
Selected artists receive accommodation and access to working space, together with organizational, promotional, and exhibition support from GENETO ART FOUNDATION.
The program is currently expanding its cultural activities through collaboration with Hieizan Enryaku-ji, one of Japan’s most historically significant Buddhist temple complexes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We welcome artists whose practices demonstrate originality, curiosity, and a meaningful interest in cultural exchange. Artists from all nationalities and career stages are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility Information
Applications are open to professional, emerging, mid-career, and established artists of all nationalities.
We welcome artists working across contemporary visual and interdisciplinary practices who are interested in developing work in dialogue with Kyoto’s cultural, historical, architectural, spiritual, or social environment.
Applicants should submit information about their artistic practice, a portfolio of recent work, and a proposal or statement describing what they hope to explore during the residency. Selection is based on the quality and originality of the applicant’s practice, the proposed project, and its suitability for the residency environment.

Applications are accepted internationally on a rolling basis.
Applicants are asked to submit the required application materials through the GENETO ART FOUNDATION Artist-in-Residence application process.
Applications are reviewed by a five-member selection committee with expertise in Japanese culture, religion, history, art, and related fields.
Applicants should provide information about their artistic background and practice, a portfolio of recent work, and a proposal describing their intended research or creative project during the residency.
Selected artists will be contacted directly by GENETO ART FOUNDATION with further information regarding residency dates, accommodation, program conditions, and preparation for their stay in Kyoto.
A non-refundable application fee of ¥5,000 JPY is required when submitting an application.
The fee supports the administrative and professional review process. Applications are evaluated by a six-member selection committee.
There is no residency participation fee for selected artists.
Selected artists receive accommodation for up to 60 days and program support from GENETO ART FOUNDATION. Artists are responsible for their own international and domestic travel, meals, personal expenses, art materials, insurance, and other expenses unless otherwise agreed in writing.
Awards or Stipend Information
No direct cash stipend is currently provided. Selected artists receive substantial in-kind support through the residency, including accommodation for up to 60 days, working space, organizational support, promotion, and opportunities for public presentation or exhibition.
