Winter/Spring 2025-2026 Session

The Micro-Residency at Bischoff Inn Inn offers artists a clean, calming and peaceful space for study, work and relaxation. Residencies last for 1 or 2 weeks and are equal parts relaxation and productive work time. Our program attracts artists with many responsibilities (working artists, families, teachers) looking to make the most of their vacation days and seeking a way to integrate art making into their valuable time off. Our cohort of artists includes writers, poets, fashion designers, scholars, photographers, sculptors, composers, and those working in painting and drawing. 

Bischoff Inn is located in downtown Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, a small town of approximately 7,000 people in the heart of PA’s Anthracite Coal Region at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Within walking distance of the Inn are a handful of restaurants, breweries, a hardware store, clothing store and grocery store. Tamaqua is located less than 30 minutes from the charming town of Jim Thorpe and less than 10 minutes to many major chain stores and additional amenities.

Tamaqua is named for the Native American Tuscarora king of the Turkey Clan, Chief Tahkamochk, and known as the "Valley Among Four Mountains" and "The Land of Running Water." Northeast Pennsylvania and Tamaqua were settled after the Walking Purchase in 1737. 

Founded in 1799, the town grew largely on the backs of European immigrants and settlers working in the coal mines, as well as businesses offering services to the town’s residents. Bischoff Inn was one of these businesses. Founded by Conrad Bischoff, a Bavarian immigrant who came to the US in 1857, he trained as a cabinet maker and opened his first factory in 1867 in Tamaqua. He expanded his furniture & casket making business to the Inn’s location on Lafayette Street only three years later in 1870.
