Private Residency
Residencies at Zea Mays Printmaking are designed to fit each artist’s unique needs and desires. In addition to our state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, we offer residents the opportunity to enhance their experience with one-on-one instruction with our expert faculty. Dig into a new printmaking technique, receive guidance and feedback on your works-in-progress, or learn to apply Zea Mays Printmaking’s sustainability methods to your existing practice.
Enjoy the luxury of a fully equipped private studio within our print shop. The Annex is equipped with a gorgeous Takach etching press (39.5″ x 72″), large work tables, flat file storage, a sink and plenty of wall space for work in progress. We are happy to bring in additional equipment and tools as needed including a vertical etching tank, large hotplate, large rollers and hand brayers, screen printing press, drying boards.
Residency artists have access to all of the other facilities in the studio during our open hours. These include:
- airbrush aquatint booth
- vertical etching tanks with Ferric Chloride mordant and Copper Sulfate Saline mordant
- plate shear
- photopolymer darkroom with NuArc K-1 exposure unit (for plates up to 18” x 24”)
- screenprinting darkroom with LED exposure unit for screens up to 27” x 34”
- screenprinting washout sink with power washer
- Vandercook 4 letterpress and Showcard letterpress with wooden type
- Digital Lab (computer, scanner, Epson 4900 printer)
- Print dryer and flattener
- Light table

Application Information
Visit https://www.zeamaysprintmaking.com/residency-calendar-and-application/ to check availability and apply. Applications are accepted year-round and responded to within two weeks of submission. We ask applying artists to include 10 images of their work.
Private Studio Residency Fees
- Individual Residency – Private studio (Annex) and one bedroom in apartment – $1000/week (2 week minimum)
- Residency Pair – two people sharing Annex studio and entire apartment $1600/week for 2 artists ($800 per person – 2 week minimum)
Additional private instruction can be scheduled ahead of your residency and costs $75/hour.
Accessibility
The first floor of the studio, which contains the printmaking Annex, teaching studio, etching, photopolymer and screenprint facilities and computer lab, is on the first floor and accessible in accordance with ADA regulations. The on-site apartment is located on the second floor, which is only accessible via stairs. Artists may enroll in a residency without housing in the apartment for a reduced fee - contact kaye@zeamaysprintmaking.com to discuss this option.
Artists with limited mobility can access the private printmaking annex and all the printmaking facilities on the first floor of the building.
The second floor of the building contains the on-site apartment, members' studio and Flat File. This area is only accessible via stairs. The only elevator in the building is a freight elevator which is not rated to carry passengers.

Studio & Facilities
The Annex houses our large Takach etching press (39.5″ x 72″) and is equipped with a sink, large work tables and wall space to hang work in progress.
The Annex is adjacent to the Teaching Studio. During the studio’s open hours, the door that separates the Annex from the main studio can be opened or closed, and tools from the main studio may be brought into the Annex for use. When the studio is closed, the door to the main studio is locked, and the Annex can be accessed through the outside entrance.
The Teaching Studio includes:

The studio is monitored from 10 AM-6 PM, Tuesday-Sunday. Monitors can help residents set presses, locate and purchase supplies, and answer basic questions. The Teaching Studio is open during the same hours.
The Annex is unmonitored and is available to residents 24/7. They are provided their own key and have a private entrance.
