Salt Road Studio Residency Japan
Salt Road Studio Residency is a fully funded international artist residency located in Akō, Japan, a historic coastal city overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Created for contemporary visual artists, the residency provides dedicated time, studio space, housing, and financial support for artists to develop new work while experiencing life in Japan.
Each year, only three artists are selected for an immersive three-week residency. Participants receive round-trip airfare, accommodations, studio access, and a stipend, allowing them to focus entirely on their creative practice. The small cohort size encourages meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and exchange among artists from different backgrounds and disciplines.
Founded by artist and curator Gina Keatley, Salt Road Studio connects creative communities between Japan and New York City while fostering artistic growth through cultural immersion. Artists are encouraged to engage with the landscape, history, food culture, and daily rhythms of Akō while pursuing independent studio work.
The residency welcomes emerging and established painters, sculptors, mixed-media artists, photographers, and interdisciplinary practitioners from around the world. Through dedicated studio time, shared experiences, and cross-cultural exchange, Salt Road Studio Residency aims to support experimentation, creative development, and lasting international connections.

Accessibility
Salt Road Studio Residency is committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for artists of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and abilities. While our facilities may have physical limitations typical of a historic Japanese setting, we strive to work with selected artists to identify reasonable accommodations whenever possible.
We provide pre-arrival communication, orientation materials, and direct access to residency staff to discuss accessibility needs, health considerations, dietary requirements, and other accommodations in advance. Our goal is to reduce barriers to participation and ensure that all artists can fully engage with the residency experience.
Artists with limited mobility can participate in most aspects of the Salt Road Studio Residency, including housing, studio practice, group discussions, cultural experiences, and artist exchanges. Because the residency is intentionally small and personalized, we work directly with selected artists prior to arrival to understand individual accessibility needs and identify reasonable accommodations whenever possible.
Some activities may involve navigating a historic Japanese environment, including uneven surfaces, stairs, or locations that are not fully accessible. Participation in certain off-site excursions may vary depending on individual mobility requirements. We encourage applicants to discuss their needs during the application process so we can determine together how best to support a successful and meaningful residency experience.
Some areas of the residency experience may present accessibility challenges. These may include beach access, waterfront areas, uneven outdoor surfaces, historic streets, and certain cultural sites or excursions that involve stairs or terrain that is difficult to navigate with mobility devices.
As a small residency program operating within a historic Japanese setting, not all locations visited during optional activities can be guaranteed to be fully accessible. We work with artists in advance to identify potential barriers and make reasonable accommodations whenever possible so participants can engage meaningfully in the residency experience.
