Founded in the spring of 2023, the Sea Breeze Artist and Writer Residency was created to offer artists and writers an inspiring place to focus on their work. The residency honors Mary Newhouse, a passionate advocate for the arts and a devoted steward of Block Island’s natural beauty. Mary believed that individual creative endeavors have the power to make the world a better place, and her spirit continues to guide our mission.
The Residency on Block Island
The ten-day residency takes place at the Sea Breeze Inn on Block Island, just off the coast of Rhode Island. With strong traditions of nurturing the arts and environmental conservation, Block Island provides a uniquely tranquil setting well suited to creative practice. We host two sessions each year during the quieter months of May and October, when reduced tourism creates a noticeable shift in energy.
Each resident has a private guest room at the Inn. Visual artists are provided with a studio space, while writers choose to work either at Sea Breeze or at the Island Free Library, one of the island’s year-round community hubs. A delicious and healthy breakfast and lunch are provided daily. The residency is intended to provide uninterrupted studio and writing time, with little distractions. Bicycles are available for residents to explore the island at their own pace. The location is ideal for exploring, and for walking into the main town of Old Harbor.
The Sea Breeze Artist and Writer Residency is committed to using a diverse, rotating jury composed of past residents and members of the island community, and also includes professional artists, writers, editors, and educators. Applications undergo a careful and thorough review process, evaluated according to multiple criteria to ensure a fair selection.
