Schedule at a Glance

Over four days (16+ hours of programming), EPI moves through the practical foundations of establishing and running a residency program. The Institute is designed for organizational leadership, board members, and staff of developing or newly launched artist residency programs and those looking to strengthen or evolve their work. If you are considering starting a residency program—or you are involved with supporting artists through a residency—then EPI is for you!

Foundation + Program Design

 
 

This session will help you to: 

  • Understand the breadth and diversity of the artist residency field
  • Clarify and articulate the mission and values that shape your program
  • Identify core design decisions that shape program structure, artist experience, and your own capacity
  • Design and develop a selection process that is equitable, transparent, and aligned with your program’s values

Organizational Management Fundamentals

 
 

This session will help you to: 

  • Understand the most common organizational structures for residency programs and the governance responsibilities each entails
  • Read and interpret a basic organizational budget and understand the relationship between financial management and program sustainability
  • Identify key legal and risk management considerations and establish basic protective policies

This session will help you to: 

  • Understand the full range of revenue streams available to artist residency programs
  • Assess your own program's revenue mix and identify opportunities for diversification
  • Write and structure a compelling grant narrative
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with funders over time
 
 

Artist Experience + Program Operations
 

 
 

This session will help you to: 

  • Articulate a clear philosophy of artist care and how it shapes program operations
  • Identify the specific needs and expectations artists bring to residency programs
  • Design operational timelines and systems that support the artist experience from pre-arrival through post-residency
  • Build the essential materials—welcome packets, pre-arrival questionnaires, and surveys—that structure the artist relationship

Community Engagement + Impact

 
 

This session will help you to: 

  • Design community engagement strategies that are reciprocal, culturally-responsive, and appropriate to the program’s mission and context
  • Develop public programming that creates genuine value for both artists and community participants
  • Build an evaluation framework appropriate to your program’s size, stage, and mission
  • Tell your program’s story in ways that are compelling, honesty, and useful for multiple audiences
 
 

Marketing, Communications + Growth
 

 
 

This session will help you to: 

  • Develop a clear, consistent identity and communications approach for your program
  • Build an effective recruitment and outreach strategy
  • Engage in strategic planning that is realistic, equity-centered, and relevant
  • Identify the organizational practices that support long-term sustainability and resilience
