Hedgebrook is on Whidbey Island, WA, situated on 48-acres of forest and meadow facing the Salish Sea, with a view of Mount Rainier. The retreat hosts writers from all over the world for free-to-writers residencies (excluding travel) of two or three weeks. Our residency hosts up to 7 women-identified writers, 18 and older, at at one time, each housed in a handcrafted cottage. Meals are lovingly prepared by our chefs daily, and writers come together each evening for a communal gathering.
This position is based at the Hedgebrook Farm on Whidbey Island, Washington. Remote work options will be considered, but the successful candidate must be able to be on-site 4-5 days per week for the first six months and at locations throughout the Puget Sound area as required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, with additional hybrid work flexibility available over time.

Summary:
Hedgebrook seeks a strategic and systems-oriented Impact and Evaluation Officer (IEO) to lead its efforts in deepening understanding of the historical and contemporaneous reach of our programs and alumnae. This new full-time role will design and implement systems for gathering, analyzing, researching and reporting qualitative and quantitative data about our diverse community of women-identified writers. The IEO reports to the Director of Strategic Partnerships and serves on the development team. The Impact and Evaluation Officer will play a central role in advancing Hedgebrook’s mission by collecting robust demographic data, researching and interviewing alumnae about their work and outcomes, supporting our fundraising case statement and impact stories, and growing our influence in the literary and arts ecosystem. This role is designed to collaborate with Hedgebrook’s leadership team to support the health and growth of our organization, train existing staff, and maximize the social and economic impact of our programs.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Management and Analysis
● Collect, archive, and organize data from various sources, including paper files, electronic records, photographs and videos. Develop and maintain comprehensive data collection systems ensuring capture of alumnae and program participants.
● Build and manage a searchable alumnae and program participant database capturing ongoing projects, published works, performances, genres, writing awards, and other relevant metrics.
● Software experience with the following: Word, Excel, Zoom, Canva, Doodle, Google Suite and relational databases, such as Raiser’s Edge or similar databases
● Create, analyze and report on diversity metrics to monitor and enhance inclusion metrics across all programming.
● Collaborate with fundraising and communications teams to track outcomes, including number of alumnae publications, print runs, downloads, media appearances, media mentions and artistic achievements.
● Identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement in the data and alumnae interviews. Standardize reporting methods and create dynamic dashboards for internal and external stakeholders
Qualitative Research and Impact Storytelling
● Research and conduct interviews to gather in-depth narratives and success stories that exemplify the transformative impact of Hedgebrook’s programs.
● Author and design reports, briefs, visualizations and impact stories for grant applications, fundraising, and public communications.
● Work closely with executive leadership to use new data and stories for strategic fundraising appeals and external communications about Hedgebrook’s impact. Relationship Building and Communications
● Build relationships with alumnae, program participants, staff and external partners.
● Communicate data insights and impact findings to various audiences, including peer and partner organizations.
● Collaborate with development, program and leadership teams and staff to implement data-driven initiatives
Measurable Outcomes:
Data Capture - History of writers in residence and program participant data from inception to date and henceforth captured annually
Inclusion Metrics - Regular analysis and reporting of number of BIPOC, disabled, immigrant and queer writers, leading to enhanced metrics
Alumnae Project Tracking - Robust database of ongoing alumnae projects and outcomes
Reporting & Analytics - Improved, accessible reporting, visuals, and dashboards for leadership and funders
Qualitative Impact - Compelling narratives of milestones and impact stories leveraged in Hedgebrook communications and fundraising content
Recognition - Measure, track and increase media mentions, recognition in book acknowledgements, and scholarly references to Hedgebrook’s impact
Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in library science, humanities, arts administration, or related field, or comparable professional experience.
● Strong organizational, interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills.
● Experience in narrative change work, program evaluation, impact measurement, or similar experience.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a mission driven environment.
● Proficient with data visualization tools (e.g., Google Suite, Tableau, Excel or similar).
● Demonstrated experience with qualitative research, interviewing participants, survey development, and narrative/report writing.
● Commitment to equity, diversity, and social justice values; ability to approach data with an inclusive lens.
● Working knowledge of data management and analysis tools (e.g., databases, CRM systems such as Raiser’s Edge, Little Green Light, etc.).
● Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of donor and alumnae information, giving histories, and sensitive personal and financial data at all times General Abilities:

Compensation and Benefits:
Hedgebrook determines its staff salaries using the Archbright Washington Annual Nonprofit Wage & Benefit Survey. Each salary is based on the average of similar positions in organizations of comparable size and are competitive for the field. For this position, the salary range is $72,000 - $82,000 depending on experience and qualifications. The position is full time, exempt and offers a benefits package including health, vision and dental coverage; 403(b) retirement plan with organizational match; and a generous paid time off program.

This position is based at the Hedgebrook Farm on Whidbey Island, Washington.
