Residency Director

Since 1973, Millay Arts has welcomed over 3000 exceptional multidisciplinary poets, writers, composers, visual and performance artists to Steepletop, the historic estate of Pulitzer prize-winning poet/activist Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Offering the gift of time and space, our fully-subsidized Core Residency (applicants selected by blind jury) provides groceries, chef-prepared communal suppers, private bedrooms and studios as well as shared living spaces, from April-November annually. Our Steepletop Residency, partially subsidized, allows for those with private/institutional support for stays (bypassing the blind jury process), and runs concurrently with the Core Residency.  Our Wintertide Rustic Retreat is open to the public for self-directed residencies from mid-December through March.  Our 11-acre campus features serene meadows and wooded trails.

Our alumni are consistently recognized with international honors, including Pulitzer, Lambda Literary, Whitbread and Gotham Book Prizes, National Book and MacArthur "Genius" Awards, Guggenheim Fellowships, and others.

Description and Qualifications

We’re hiring!

We’re hiring!

Millay Arts, one of America's longest-running multidisciplinary artist residencies, is seeking an experienced, mission-driven Residency Director to help lead and shape our renowned program at the historic estate of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Steepletop.

Diversity is core to Millay Arts' mission. We are committed to building a residency community and staff that
reflects the full range of voices in literature, visual and performance art, music, film and theatre. We strongly encourage candidates from all
backgrounds, including those historically underrepresented in the field, to apply.

From the jury process to the communal dinner table, you’ll help shape every part of an artist’s experience. This full-time leadership role offers the opportunity to:

• Lead and continually evolve Millay Arts’ residency program;

• Create a welcoming, mission-driven experience for artists across disciplines;

• Provide operational and program leadership;

• Work closely with the Executive Director on organizational strategy; and

• Help shape a residency program entering its second half-century!

The Residency Director provides operational leadership for the residency program, champions a welcoming and mission-aligned artist experience, and works in close partnership with the Executive Director to connect program excellence to organizational strategy.

This opportunity is designed for a candidate who understands that hospitality is inseparable from artistic support — who understands that a private studio, chef-prepared communal suppers, and a small, tight-knit cohort of gifted peers are not amenities, but part of the work itself. At Millay Arts, the Residency Director delivers that experience personally and directly.

The ideal candidate will have deep experience managing an artist residency or comparable cultural program,
who is drawn to the intimacy of a small, historic setting, welcomes the chance to help shape a program entering
its second half-century and brings a dedicated commitment to Millay Arts’ mission.
