Sculpture Space 2027 Open Call (Nov 2025)

Associated Residency Program

Sculpture Space champions the transformative power of contemporary sculpture to shape culture, provoke dialogue, and inspire connection. Through residencies and public programs, we support exceptional artists whose work expands the language of sculpture and engages the world around them. We believe that a robust sculptural practice enriches public life and fosters deeper collective well-being.

Nestled in Utica, New York, Sculpture Space occupies a former industrial site on the edge of the city’s historic downtown—a region once defined by manufacturing and now reimagined through creativity and cultural renewal. The 5,500-square-foot studio combines raw industrial character with modern functionality: 3,800 square feet of open workspace, six semi-private studios, concrete floors, a two-ton traveling hoist system, and extra-wide overhead doors for large-scale fabrication. Outside, artists work on ¾ acres of open land with an outdoor pad and 50-foot monorail hoist, ideal for ambitious projects under the changing Upstate sky.

Artists live just a block away in a renovated multi-level residence that offers private bedrooms, shared living and kitchen spaces, and easy access to the studio. The neighborhood—surrounded by light industry, workshops, and small fabricators—invites collaboration and resourceful making. From this dynamic setting, artists can explore Utica’s growing network of cultural partners, community organizations, and natural landscapes, from the Mohawk River to the foothills of the Adirondacks.

Each year, 20–25 artists are selected for two-month residencies, joining a community that thrives on experimentation, generosity, and exchange. Sculpture Space is more than a studio—it’s a living intersection of art, industry, and imagination.

Additional Eligibility Information

Since 1976, Sculpture Space has supported the creative growth of more than 630 artists from around the world, offering time, space, and resources to expand their practice in a deeply collaborative setting. Our residency thrives on exchange — between artists, curators, writers, and the broader community — through informal studio visits, shared meals, and conversations that spark new ideas and lifelong connections.

Each cohort culminates in a Works-in-Progress reception, welcoming the public into the studio to experience art in formation and meet the artists behind it. Additional visits are arranged by appointment, inviting ongoing engagement between residents and the community.

Artists are selected by a panel of peers and professionals in the field of contemporary sculpture. Selection is based on the quality, originality, and potential of the applicant’s work and proposal. Accepted artists are notified in March.

Each resident receives a $1,000 stipend to help offset travel and material expenses. Depending on available funding, additional financial assistance may be offered. We encourage artists to seek supplemental support through individual grants and partnerships to make the most of their time in residence.
