Hamiltonian Artists’ mission is to nurture community and increase access to space, opportunity, and resources for emerging artists through impactful programs and exhibitions. We envision a city recognized nationally and internationally as a vibrant hub for contemporary art and culture—one where artists have the tools, visibility, and support to thrive. By equipping early-career artists with resources that support the sustainability of both their creative practice and professional livelihood, Hamiltonian Artists helps ensure that DC remains a place where artists not only live but also build lasting, impactful careers.
What makes an artist’s experience at Hamiltonian Artists unique is the depth and combination of support we offer. Through a blend of professional development programs, subsidized studio space, and access to networks of peers, curators, collectors, and cultural leaders, artists can advance ambitious projects while developing the tools to navigate the art world with confidence.
The fellowship is our flagship program and the only initiative of its kind in the region. Each year, a rotating jury of curators, artists, gallerists, and fellowship alumni selects 3–5 fellows through an open application process. Jurors evaluate applicants based on the quality of their artwork, growth potential, and commitment to community. Once selected, artists gain more than exhibition opportunities; they enter a two-year relationship with a community that fosters experimentation, growth, and long-term career sustainability. During this time, fellows are expected to be proactive in their creative and professional development while engaging with their peers and contributing to the Washington, DC-area arts ecosystem.
