ACA PRESENTS | 2022 Programs + Events

ACA Staff
February 22, 2022

For the past two years, Artist Communities Alliance has been working to foster connectivity and knowledge-sharing online.

We’ve developed a robust set of year-round virtual programs including #ResidenciesConnect networking sessions, field-wide conversations, and the Equitable Capacity Workshop series.

Until guidelines affirm that it is safe to host large, in-person gatherings, we will not host any in-person events — including the ACA Conference — but we will continue, albeit virtually, to unite and support the people who power residencies.

We are excited to announce the following programs for Winter 2022 and beyond:

Field Conversation
Response + Risk: Navigating COVID’s Impact on the Artist Residency Field
Thursday, February 24 | 1:00pm-2:30pm ET

Throughout the pandemic, artist residency programs have never stopped navigating decision-making and adjustment. From travel restrictions limiting artists' mobility and monitoring campus communal spaces and facilities; to working with the public and managing vaccination mandates, organizations and programs have had to manage instability, tension and anxiety.

Artist residencies occupy a complex space somewhere between a studio, a school, a business and a service provider. This unique position within the arts sector complicates things further — there is no one guide or model to follow. However, in some ways, this has fostered creativity and introspection within the artist residency field — programs have had to think deeply and critically about their needs and the populations they serve. They have learned to build processes and systems that work well for this unique positioning.

On Thursday, February 24, 2022 from 1:00pm - 2:30pm EST ACA’s Executive Director, Lisa Funderburke Hoffman will join leaders from across fields to consider, Where have we been and where will we go? How has the artist residency field shifted and changed over the last two years? What can we expect for the future of this field? How can staff develop a decision-making matrix and risk assessment and safety planning tools to carve a path forward?

We hope you will join us for this dynamic and nuanced Field Conversation. This event is free and open to all. Please include any questions you may have for the panel in your registration form.

Training Program
Emerging Program Institute
Fall 2022

This Fall, ACA will host Emerging Program Institute (EPI), an annual training program that supports people and organizations in the early stages of creating a residency program. Since 2011, this yearly training program has welcomed emerging leaders at all residency development phases — from the initial ideation stage to residencies preparing to launch.

This year’s EPI will take place virtually. Stay tuned for more information about the application process.

We look forward to a fruitful year of learning and connectivity. We will share further information about registration and application processes for some of these programs in the near future.
