Description and Qualifications

The Center for the Humanities at Tufts University, in partnership with the Mellon Foundation-funded project University Ecologies and the Question of the Commons, invites applications for a visiting artist, who will spend a 3-month period at Tufts in spring 2026.

A description of the University Ecologies project is available here: https://humanities.tufts.edu/university-ecologies-and-question-commons

The 2025/26 academic year will engage closely with placemaking, public space, lawn monocultures, and the entanglements of cultural diversity and biodiversity.

The visiting artist will be expected to participate in cross-disciplinary discussions and attend in-person events to reimagine campus environments, challenge hierarchies of knowledge production, diversify monocultural ecologies such as lawns, and deconstruct the histories of land possession and animal production that higher education institutions have supported. The artist will be in consistent dialogue with a postdoctoral fellow, doctoral candidates, community organizers, invited speakers including artists, scholars, and activists, as well as Tufts faculty, staff, workers, and students.

In addition, the visiting artist will set aside dedicated time for the conceptualization, presentation, and possible realization of performative interventions, artist talks, and/or artistic projects inspired by the overall project's theme. They will have access to shared space and, after receiving required certifications, they will be able to use facilities at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts.

Qualification is negotiable and depends on field of expertise.
