Ey!Studio AiR is an international artist residency program developed by Ey!Studio, a non-profit cultural association and independent creative space located in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, a district experiencing a growing and dynamic cultural scene.
The program provides time, space, and context for the development of research, experimentation, and contemporary creative projects, with particular attention to the communication and visibility of residents’ work through Ey!Studio’s channels.
The program is open to visual artists, filmmakers, curators, researchers, writers, playwrights, musicians, and other professionals working in culture and creative practices, regardless of nationality or age. Projects from a wide range of disciplines and contemporary practices are welcome. The working languages are Spanish and English.
Ey!Studio AiR offers two participation options:
Live/Work: a residency with accommodation in private studios designed to function as both living and working spaces.
Studio Residency: a residency without accommodation for artists who prefer to arrange their own stay in Madrid.
Within these options, participants can choose between an independent working format, allowing them to develop their project autonomously during the residency, or a format with optional curatorial support.
As part of Ey!Studio’s annual program, visual artists and filmmakers have the option of participating in an annual group exhibition of residents, which takes place a few months after the completion of the residencies. Artists therefore leave the selected work on deposit with Ey!Studio.
Ey!Studio is responsible for the production, coordination, and installation of the exhibition, as well as the curatorial text, graphic identity, and professional photographic and video documentation. Selected works may subsequently be included in other curatorial projects developed by Ey!Studio, such as exhibitions, art fairs, and other initiatives, as well as in our online gallery.
Duration of Residency
Residencies are available for periods of 4, 8, or 12 weeks.
Accommodation
Accommodation is provided in a private studio of approximately 18 m², designed to function as both a living and working space within Ey!Studio. Please consult the residency dossier for further information.
Disciplines, Work Equipment and Support
The program is open to visual artists, filmmakers, curators, researchers, writers, playwrights, musicians, and other professionals working in culture and creative practices, regardless of nationality or age. Projects from a wide range of disciplines and contemporary practices are welcome.
Residents can choose between an independent working format or, in the case of visual artists and filmmakers, an optional format with curatorial support.
Studio / Workspace
In the Live/Work option, each resident has access to a private studio designed as both a working and living space.
When spaces are available, residents in this option may also use the shared workspace located in the central area of Ey!Studio, where they will have access to an individual working area of approximately 12 m².
In the Studio Residency option (without accommodation), each resident has access to an individual working area of approximately 12 m² within the shared central workspace, with natural light.
Fees and Support
The program operates with participation fees that already include a partial grant provided by Ey!Studio. As a result, selected artists only cover part of the actual cost of the residency.
Once selected, we are happy to provide invitation or pre-selection letters that may support applications for external funding from universities, cultural institutions, public bodies, foundations, or other organizations in the artist’s home country.
Although we would like to be able to cover 100% of the residency costs, this is currently not possible for an independent cultural organization in Spain. For this reason, we ask participating artists to contribute financially to the program.
Participation fees directly contribute to the maintenance and continuity of the residency program and allow us to continue creating opportunities for mobility and support for artists and cultural professionals from different countries.
Expectations Towards the Artist
Residents are not required to give talks, workshops, public presentations, or Open Studios as part of the residency.
Participation in public activities organized by Ey!Studio is voluntary and may be proposed occasionally, depending on the program and the interests of each participant.
Visual artists and filmmakers also have the option of voluntarily participating in the annual group exhibition of residents, which takes place a few months after the completion of the residency.
