DEEP SPACE is a performance residency program for artists and groups who are experimenting and making new works along the fringes of the mainstream. We believe performance that pushes the envelope in form and content requires time and space beyond what is customary, in order to allow artists to dig deeply into the processes of creation and production. DEEP SPACE provides artists with use of the NACL performance hall and artist residence for a period of rehearsal and development (one week residencies are typical, April-November) culminating in a public sharing with an invited audience.
Deep Space Performance Residencies support artists or ensembles creating new works at any stage in the development process, from concept through technical production. Each year we attempt to schedule a mix of early-phase, mid-phase, and late-phase projects for week-long residencies at our Cultural Laboratory and Artist Residence in New York’s southwestern Catskills. We accept applications throughout the year. There is a Jan 31 deadline for consideration for residencies offered in the following calendar year. Our Curation Council — made up of past Deep Space artists and NACL artistic staff — convenes in March and finalizes programming decisions by May.

Application Information
The Deep Space program is open to groups or ensembles as well as individual performing artists engaged in the creation of new work. Each residency can accommodate up to 15 participants. We prioritize projects that stand to gain the most from the resources of space and time that the NACL residency center uniquely provides. The Deep Space Residency Program is designed expressly to accommodate the needs of ensembles and group projects, and is inclined to support creator-performer, performer-driven, or collaborative creation models over standard script-based productions.

All residencies are partially-subsidized by NACL. The level of subsidy is based on fluctuating availability of public and private funding. Upon selection as a Deep Space Artist, the applicant will review the financial forecast with NACL staff, and may be asked to help raise funds to support a portion of their residency costs. Currently, at minimum, all artists/companies are responsible for arranging and funding their own transportation to/from NACL and for covering a portion of food costs at $12/person/day. The amount listed here is the current minimum fee for meals for each individual at the rate of $12 per day, based on a 7-day residency.
