DE PROEF is a vibrant ecological campus and living heritage site, blending history, nature, and creativity. Set on eight hectares of meticulously documented historical gardens—originally a horticultural school’s educational garden (1884)—it now features 493 inventoried trees from 407 species, monumental avenues, and a trial garden that supplies the on-site Proeflokaal cafe.
DE PROEF. is located in Frederiksoord, on the UNESCO site of the former Colonies of Benevolence.
The campus offers diverse experiences: enjoy seasonal dishes at the Proeflokaal, sourced from the gardens and local producers; join workshops on wild harvesting, fermentation, or gardening; or hire a space for meetings, events, or weddings in its monumental buildings. The Proefshop sells local gifts, books, and vouchers, while the atelier crafts custom furniture and gifts.
