Since 2007, ACA’s Emerging Program Institute (EPI) has equipped artist residency leaders with the tools, networks, and vision needed to build thriving, inclusive programs. What began as a resource for newly founded residencies has grown into a dynamic learning space for both emerging and established programs seeking to evolve their models.

The inaugural EPI in Chicago brought together best practices in organizational development, artist support, outreach, and space planning—laying the foundation for a field that prioritizes intentional growth and responsiveness. As the residency landscape shifted, so did EPI. By 2016, the curriculum expanded to include a “Nonprofit 101” track, helping participants deepen their understanding of governance, fundraising, and long-term sustainability.

EPI’s evolution reflects ACA’s broader commitment to equity and capacity-building. In 2023, the program embraced a renewed framework: The Five Pillars of a Healthy Residency—Identity, Program Design, Operational Excellence, Resource Development, and Stewardship. These pillars guide participants through critical questions about structure, mission, financial health, and how to truly center artists in every facet of their work.

Today, EPI operates in a flexible hybrid model that increases access and expands reach. With a focus on leadership development, DEI practices, and financial resilience, EPI continues to shape the future of the field—supporting residency programs not just to grow, but to grow well.
