Sculpture Space 2026 Open Call (Nov 2025)

Associated Residency Program

Sculpture Space seeks to build appreciation for the role of contemporary art and artists in society through residencies and other programs for outstanding sculptors that foster creative exploration, community collaboration, public engagement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Because sculpture has the power to positively transform society, we support sculptors and nurture public  discourse about important art issues. We posit that a robust sculpture realm yields greater public well- being. The studio is located in Utica New York (12 Gates St), close to downtown, in proximity to light industry and various fabrication shops. The collaborative environment of the studio and the communal aspects of the residence help foster dialogue, exchange of ideas, creative experimentation and both personal and professional connections. The 5,500 square foot facility consists of 3,800 square feet of open studio space and six enclosed semi-private studios. The studio is outfitted with concrete floors, a two ton system of traveling hoists, and extra wide overhead doors. Both studio and house provide wireless access and artists may borrow available digital equipment. The 3⁄4 acres of land surrounding the building can supplement indoor studio space during certain times of the year. An  outdoor work pad is equipped with a 50' monorail hoist. Each year we invite 20-25 artists to join our residency in Utica for a two months and partially funded

Additional Eligibility Information

Since 1976, Sculpture Space has helped to support the careers and studio practice of over 630 artists from around the world.  As desired, artists and arts professionals (including curators and writers) are invited for informal studio visits. The collaborative environment of the studio and the communal aspects of the residence help foster dialogue, the exchange of ideas, creative experimentation and both personal and professional connections.  The local community is invited to Works in Progress reception during each cohort; other visits are arranged by appointment.

Artists are selected to the program by a panel of artists and professionals in the sculpting field. Applicants will be notified in March if accepted.  Primary criteria for selection are based on the quality, originality and potential of each artist work and proposed project. We offer a $500 stipend to offset travel and expenses. Dependent on funding, financial aid may be made available. Funded residencies should not be relied on and all accepted artists are encouraged to find individual grants and funding.
