Virtual Event

We know that access can mean many things to different people and that assumptions and expectations about how our programs support artists can sometimes be unspoken. How can we better understand and communicate our own assumptions and goals and set up our artists and residency operators for successful residency experiences?
Through your thoughtful invitation process, you have selected your cohort and are making plans for their arrival. What steps can you take to ensure that all involved staff and artists understand how they contribute to the experience? How can you orient and steward your artists through their residency, considering not only the time they spend in and around your facilities, but in the communities and neighborhoods in which you are located?
Each stage of your program offers opportunities for you to demonstrate your organization’s values. How can you develop the most thoughtful, inviting and honest system to serve each individual artist while evolving and protecting your organization in the long run? How can you ensure that your artist support is as transparent, inclusive, and equitable as possible?
Join us for this two-day intensive, where we will explore the strategies and practices for creating welcoming, inclusive, and accessible artist residency programs. Learn from field professionals about the approaches that have been most effective in supporting artists of all backgrounds and hear directly from artists about their experiences. These sessions will balance presentation, informal discussion, and break-out group exercises so that you can practice and share what you are learning with your colleagues, and develop actionable items to take away.

About ACA's Equitable Capacity Workshops (ECW)
ECW are nuts-and-bolts intensives designed to provide focused opportunities to:
- Gain insights from industry professionals about strategies and approaches that work to enhance access and equity in your residency programs;
- identify and understand barriers to success in particular areas;
- Connect with colleagues across the field; and
- Leave the workshop with actionable next steps to accomplish your goals.
“Equitable Capacity” is a term coined in 2019 by Artist Communities Alliance (ACA)'s President + CEO, Lisa Funderburke, and is defined as the facility or power to embody transparency and access across all areas of an organization, specifically its policies, processes, and practices.
This workshop series was created by ACA in alignment with the Five Pillars of a Healthy Residency framework and in response to common challenges among artist residency programs. They are designed to help foster more just and joyful residency experiences for artists, residency operators, and for the field.
