Casa Hechale International Artist Residency – Theatre & Performance & New Work
Casa Hechale’s International Artist Residency is a residential platform for theatre, performance, and new work in Mexico City. Designed for performing artists, it welcomes individuals, duos, and collaborations working across acting, directing, playwriting, dramaturgy, translation, dance, movement, sound, and interdisciplinary performance.
Selected artists spend two or four weeks researching, writing, rehearsing, experimenting, or advancing a project. The residency is process-centered: no finished production or public outcome is required. Residents live and work under one roof, with accommodation, scheduled rehearsal and creation space, and the option to request Casa Hechale’s Black Box Theatre, subject to availability and prior agreement.
Each residency begins with orientation and includes a Community Manager, a project conversation with the creative team, and an advisory session offering feedback, dramaturgical exchange, mentoring, or professional dialogue. Residents may join performances, readings, workshops, talks, salons, and community gatherings while retaining independence. Each cycle includes an informal Open House, and relevant introductions may be arranged with artists and cultural organizations across Mexico City.
Open worldwide and operating in English and Spanish, the program fosters exchange among Mexican, Chicano, U.S., Latin American, Spanish, European, and international artists. Limited partial scholarships are available for four-week residents.

Accessibility
Artists with limited mobility can participate in most aspects of the residency experience. The street entrance is step-free, and accommodation can be arranged on the ground floor so that the resident does not need to use stairs. A kitchen is also available on the ground floor. The Black Box Theatre is located on the same level as the entrance, and residency activities can be coordinated in accessible ground-floor spaces whenever possible.
The facility does not currently have a purpose-built accessible bathroom or grab bars. We therefore ask artists to discuss their specific mobility and bathroom-access needs with staff before confirming a residency. This allows us to review the available ground-floor accommodation and determine whether it can safely and comfortably meet the artist’s individual requirements.
Second-floor bedrooms and any activities located on the upper floor may not be accessible to artists who cannot use stairs. Residents with limited mobility can instead be accommodated on the ground floor and can use the ground-floor kitchen and Black Box Theatre without taking stairs.
Casa Hechale does not currently have a purpose-built accessible bathroom, grab bars, or other adapted bathroom fixtures. Because accessibility needs vary, applicants are encouraged to contact the accessibility representative before accepting a residency offer so that staff can explain the facilities clearly, review individual requirements, and determine whether the available ground-floor arrangements are suitable.
