Connecting Artists and Students

We know that art education provides students with skills that benefit them in the art studio and beyond: creativity, focus, critique, planning, and much more. When students attend school surrounded by art, they learn to think artistically, and they develop an understanding that the role of the arts in our society is crucially important. This knowledge is vital to our students as they grow into the innovators and creators of tomorrow.

This is the impetus behind the McNeely Family Studio Residency, a program established in 2021 through the generosity of the McNeely family: Kevin, Rosemary, and Hannah Rose ‘19. The McNeelys are passionate about the arts in all of their forms, and this love for creative expression inspired them to endow a residency program that would attract established artists to be “embedded” in daily life at Sonoma Academy for an extended period of time.

The goal of the residency is to host working artists from around the country and the world who will work closely with our students, cultivating the next generation of talented artists and providing insight into what it means to pursue a career in visual art. Artists will give lectures, hold workshops, exhibit their own work, create community-based art projects, and meaningfully engage with students, parents, and staffulty.

Cloth Collaborative Studio and Workshop

Location

1476 River st
2nd floor
Hyde Park, MA 02136
United States

Cloth Collaborative is an art making space focused on textile practices as a means to explore ourselves in relationship to each other and the earth, a space where community can come together,  make, converse, and heal. We host small (6 to 8 participants)  textile based courses, intensive  workshops and project-based workshops,  along with open studio time. The space is a collaborative and wholistic effort, teaching hands on classes, hosting conversations, book groups,  and artist talks exploring the intersection of making and community building. We believe art has the potential to be a transformative agent in the world both on a personal and cultural level.

Evoramonte, Portugal

OBRAS is an international artist residency offering artists and researchers time, space, and solitude. Located near the village of Évoramonte in Portugal’s Alentejo region, the residency exists to support sustained, self-directed work

OBRAS—a Portuguese word meaning work in progress—refers to the active state of making: work that is underway, evolving, unresolved. The residency is built around that condition, offering artists the space and time to focus on their work without prescribed outcomes or imposed programs. Each resident determines the direction and pace of their stay.

The focus here is not on finishing something or producing a result, but on giving your work the attention it needs to develop. A residency could lead to a completed work. Or to a shift in direction, a series of experiments, or a clearer understanding of what your practice.

Residents live and work alongside a small international group while maintaining the independence necessary for concentrated practice. Opportunities to share work exist informally through conversations, artist talks, shared meals, and twice-yearly open studios, but participation is never required.

OBRAS welcomes emerging and established practitioners working across disciplines, including visual art, writing, music, film, architecture, performance, and research-based practices.

The property has developed over generations and includes traditional Portuguese buildings, independent cottages, and studios spread across the landscape. Surrounded

Farwell House Artist Residency is a multidisciplinary artist residency with a mission to nurture the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists (21 yrs+) to work without interruption in a supportive, rural environment. We strive to develop opportunities that are inclusive and welcoming to all, regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, or ability. Artists are selected through an open application process to live and work at Farwell House for a two week period. During this time artists have the opportunity to work on various tasks related to their artistic field. Also during this time, artists will be required to participate in one community engagement activity. This requirement may be accomplished through an exhibit, studio visit, workshop, reading, lecture or performance. Although our primary goal is to provide space and time for the artist, we deeply desire to engage with our communities through this type of interaction.

Obee Editions Collaborative Printmaking Residency

Black Mountain, NC, United States

Obee Editions offers a collaborative artist residency focused on the creation of original fine art printmaking projects. Artists work one-on-one with Tamarind Master Printer Perry Obee to develop new work through traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques.

This is a collaborative residency, not a class, workshop, or private studio rental. Perry handles the technical aspects of printing while the artist leads all aesthetic and conceptual decisions and actively generates plates, stones, or other matrices under guidance and supervision. Through sustained dialogue and shared decision making, projects evolve organically and often arrive at unexpected outcomes.

Residents can expect a focused, immersive studio experience emphasizing experimentation, translation, and collaboration through processes including lithography, monotype, relief, chine collé, digital processes, artist books, and hybrid approaches.

Artists working in any medium are encouraged to apply. Prior printmaking experience is welcome but not required.

Other Services/Aids Offered in Residency + Other Programming

As a small, collaborative printmaking studio, Obee Editions provides individualized support through direct communication with the master printer before and during the residency. We are available to discuss access needs in advance and will do our best to accommodate artists within the limitations of the space. Orientation is provided upon arrival, and ongoing guidance is offered throughout the residency to support both studio access and process-based needs.

In addition to residencies, Obee Editions engages in collaborative publishing projects and exhibitions of artist editions, and participates in art fairs and other public-facing programming that highlight work developed in the studio.

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

Artists with limited mobility can access and participate in a significant portion of the residency within the main studio space, which is step-free and accessible via a ground-level garage door entrance. Most printmaking processes, collaborative work with the master printer, and studio-based activities take place in this main area.

However, the bathroom is not wheelchair accessible due to a step-down entry, and some areas of the building have limited access. We encourage artists to contact us in advance to discuss specific access needs so we can plan accordingly and provide as much support as possible within the constraints of the space.

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

Obee Editions operates as an active collaborative studio rather than a passive workspace rental. Artists work one-on-one with a master printer in a production-focused environment where process, experimentation, and dialogue are central to the development of each project.

The studio supports both editioned and unique works, and projects often evolve through direct engagement with materials and iterative decision-making in real time. While artists lead the conceptual and aesthetic direction, technical aspects of print production are supported through close collaboration throughout the residency.

The studio environment is structured for focused making, with time dedicated to both independent work and collaborative printing sessions. Residencies are flexible and adapted to the needs of each project, within the limits of the facilities and schedule.

Obee Editions is located in Black Mountain, North Carolina, near Asheville, and is part of a broader regional arts community with connections to visiting artists, publishers, and exhibition opportunities.

Stone Quarry’s Visiting Artist Program focuses on artists’ engagements with the landscape in a variety of materials, approaches, and disciplines. Stone Quarry envisions the park as a boundary object, a space that anyone can imagine, contribute, and collectively shape. The Visiting Artist Program positions responsiveness and collaboration at its center to create inclusive and equitable relationships with artists. Visiting Artists are awarded a stipend to create a project on the grounds. The Program is both process and project-based, which makes each artist’s conversation and time with Stone Quarry designed to fit the needs of the artist and their work.

We do not accept submissions for this program. Stone Quarry's Artistic Director administers invitations to participate in the visiting artist program. This process is guided by an Art Advisory Committee, a group of independent artists and scholars whose wide-ranging expertise informs the programming and advances the organization's commitment to equitable and inclusive practices.

Kadiköy, İstanbul, Türkiye

arthereistanbul, a multicultural space located at the crossing-bridge between Europe and Asia
Istanbul is often considered as one of the Art Cities of the Future: a city rich a vibrant and vital art scene, connected both to Europe and Asia, while also relating to the Middle-East. The city is often seen as a bridge between the East and the West, a cosmopolitan space where hundreds of cultures coexist.

One of Istanbul art scenes main characteristics may also be its strong intertwining with the country’s political life and its geographic situation. This contributed to shape singular and strong artistic expressions tied to local issues and individual specificities.

In this context, arthereistanbul aims to:
– foster research, creativity and in arts and culture by opening an space to artists from all over the world to develop their ideas and projects.

Arthereistanbul is an independent, artist-run space and residency based in the Yeldeğirmeni neighborhood of Kadıköy, Istanbul, founded in 2014 by displaced Syrian artists. Operating on a non-profit basis, it supports artistic production, intercultural dialogue, and community-based practices, with a particular focus on artists at risk affected by conflict, censorship, or displacement.

Arthereistanbul combines residencies, exhibitions, workshops, public programmes, and collaborative projects connecting local and international artists with surrounding communities. Over the years, it has developed projects addressing social inclusion, LGBTQ+ visibility, ecology, neighborhood collaboration, and freedom of expression, while also participating in regional networks supporting artists at risk.

The space includes shared studios, workshops, accommodation, a sound lab, darkroom, and production facilities, functioning as both a cultural platform and a living environment for exchange and experimentation. Working within the dense urban context of Istanbul, Arthereistanbul develops adaptive, low-resource, and community-oriented approaches to artistic and cultural practice.
