Work in Ceramics, Painting and Printmaking on the Greek Island of Skopelos

Skopelos, Greece

The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts was established as a non-profit organization in 1999 by the Founder, Gloria Carr. For years it was her vision to create a studio for artists. She wasn’t sure where it would be set up until 1996 when she visited the island of Skopelos.

Skopelos is a unique island with the contrast of light and color. It is the greenest island located in the Northern Sporades. The locals add to the extraordinary flavor of the island and this is where Gloria Carr decided to create a studio.

The mission of the Foundation is to promote the visual arts and education in the arts through cultural exchanges. Guided by the Hellenic history and culture, the Foundation will promote artistic dialogue between the Greek, American and International communities of artists.

Gloria’s background is in printmaking with a Master’s Degree from the Pratt Institute in New York. This is why the Foundation is so appealing. She knew what it was like to work in studios, and wanted to make it a place that would bring out the most of an artist’s creativity. She also wanted a variety of media so she added ceramics, painting and sculpture.

The ceramics area is open raw space with a gorgeous view of the neighboring island, Alonnisos. There are two electric kilns, three wheels on site and and a slab roller. The Foundation is affiliated with Nikos Rodios, who is a world renowned potter and is known for his patented firing technique that creates a beautiful onyx that he applies to his work modele

The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts offers residencies for a period of three weeks for ceramists, mixed media artists, painters, printmakers (with the exception of etchers), and sculptors from April through October. The mission of the Foundation is to promote the visual arts and education in the arts through cultural exchanges. The studio space is a sanctuary for artists to explore, reflect and dialogue within the unique community created by each cohort of resident artists - informed and inspired by the flora, fauna and citizens of Skopelos.

Eligibility

  • Printmaking and ceramics residents must have a solid working knowledge of their medium and respective studio equipment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to navigate island terrain.
  • Ability to interact with fellow artists in a positive, supportive manner.

  • ·During the residency tourists may come through the studio. Artists are asked to cordially engage in conversation. These visits are infrequent, but important to the health of the organization.
  • Artists will be asked to share a five-to-ten-minute presentation about their work during the residency. Each cohort will decide collectively with the Foundation director on the timing of this sharing exchange.

If you chose to participate in a 2025 residency, and then decide to postpone, you must reapply for the following year.

For artists that are in need, there is an opportunity to apply for a work exchange. Please complete the information requested on the application and the Board of Directors will determine your eligibility.

Application Process:

  • You must sign up for Slideroom at the beginning of the application.
  • ·Residency Proposal
  • ··One character reference

  • ·$10 non-refundable application fee to Slideroom.

If you have questions about supplies, please contact us for further information. Keep in mind, flexibility is the key to an incredible experience!

Transporting Work Home:

Artists need to consider how they will transport their work home upon completion of the residency. There is a local post office on the island. Work may be shipped home, but artists should budget for the expenditure.

Each artist that visits the Foundation is extremely important to us. Our commitment is to provide artists with space, time, and facilities to not only fulfill their artistic goals, but to also have an experience of island living. We encourage togetherness and hope that artists will develop long-lasting friendships after their experience. We understand a residency is a large commitment for artists traveling from abroad. The Foundations goal is to provide an opportunity for discovery and insight.

The benefit of a residency at the Foundation can extend well beyond the residency experience. Ideally, we hope artists return home invigorated and inspired to create a new body of work.

*The ceramics studio is not equipped to support production pottery. Certainly, the skills to make a series of identical works can be an important part of the exploration process for ceramists and the Foundation celebrates the development of new skills. If a ceramist’s goal is to refine a particular form they are encouraged to do so, but there is an expectation that only the best results will be fired. Production work is considered more than eight identical forms. You will be charged an extra firing fee per batch of work, if you exceed these standards.

Our retreats and residency utilize the private and public albergues and casa rurales all along the Camino de Santiago.  Albergues are hostels which are specifically designed to serve pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. The basic bed set-up is modest with a simple bed or bunk and shared bath facilities.  Albergues are only available to pilgrims, meaning a pilgrim credential is required to check-in. This guarantees that pilgrims will be sleeping among like-minded (and equally tired) folks with whom you are united in the shared pilgrimage experience.

The tradition of albergues (or refugios or hospitales) dates back to the beginning of the Way of Saint James. The ethic is to provide rest and sustenance for the weary pilgrim.

Marathons: Intensive Workshops in Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture

New York , NY, United States

Marathons engage the practices of drawing, painting, and sculpture as direct methodologies for understanding one’s experience in the world. Open to artists of all levels, courses are taught daily in-person or virtually in real time from 9am–6pm ET. Participating artists are exposed to a wide range of process-driven approaches to making art, new visual languages, and experimentation, guided by extensive group and individual critiques.

Marathons are offered five times a year: 10-day In-Person and Virtual Marathons are offered at the start of the Fall (September) and Spring (January) semesters and during Summer Session (June and July); Virtual 5-day Intersession Marathons are held mid-semester (November and March).

The innovation and depth of these programs expand participants’ fluency with materials and lead to new ways of thinking that continue far beyond each program’s conclusion. Artists may also be interested in NYSS’ full-time Certificate program (in-person and virtual options).

The School’s internationally-recognized Marathon programs were developed in 1988 by Dean Graham Nickson, initially as a measure for the rest of the semester at the start of the program year. The program has since expanded to become a core component of the School’s curriculum. Meanwhile, intense outside interest led to the extension of the Marathons to a wider audience of participants outside of the full-time student body. Renowned artists, art historians, dealers, collectors, art educators, writers, journalists and students of all levels and affiliations have since experienced the intensity of the program.

Originally designed to address the importance of drawing as the basis of understanding one’s experience in the world, the Marathons are based on an exploration of this most direct route to an enriched understanding of the language of the plastic arts. The innovation inherent in the Marathon program reawakens the way that drawing is experienced by artists and appreciators alike. The Marathons are intensive, all-day programs that run for two weeks at the beginning of each semester and during the Summer Session. Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture Marathons are offered by both regular faculty and distinguished visiting artists who are present for the entire two-week session. All programs operate along the same basic model of immersing the student in their chosen discipline.

The level of commitment reached by participants during the Marathon is extraordinary. Each individual must confront the problems of drawing, painting, and sculpture with vigor and intensity if they are to show that they are equal to the fierce demands of concentration and stamina necessary for the program. Not only are participants fully engaged in the physical aspects of making art, they are also intellectually challenged and stimulated by extensive group and individual critiques. The creation of strong and surprising works can be the catalyst for future work. In addition to being part of the full-time program, application to the Marathons are open to beginning and advanced artists regardless of their affiliations. Admission follows the same requirements and procedures as the full-time program. Fees for the ten-day course must be paid in full upon registration.

The Marathon course hours are 9am to 6pm, with a lunch break from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. In some Marathons, there may be critiques. The specific critique schedule will be determined once courses have commenced.

If you are currently enrolled as a full-time student at NYSS, or if you have successfully completed a Marathon or full-time program within the last five years, you are not required to submit an application in order to enroll in upcoming Marathons. Learn more here.

Alchemy Artists Residency

Hillier , ON, Canada

ALCHEMY: an artist-led international residency where food, art, and community come together.

Since 2015, Alchemy has invited artists to connect, collaborate, and reflect in two unique Canadian settings: the Toronto Islands and Prince Edward County. Guided by four pillars—food, art, garden, and table—we document and share art making, meals, and conversation. At Alchemy, artists deepen their practices, exchange ideas, and engage with the people, communities and landscapes that host us.

A community setting for inquiry and discovery

Through community engagement and commitment to a collaborative process, we collect, tell, and document multiple stories showcasing what compels people to continue to create, grow, farm, and live in two unique communities.

Shared meals, readings and discussions probe the creative intersection of food & art in a community setting & help us better understand the magic & inspiration created by making & sharing art & food.

This residency is for those practicing visual arts, sculpture, photography, craft, food,  performance art, writing, music, and video.

Coordinators:   Claire Tallarico, is a visual artist and chef whose practice explores the everyday rituals of art & food making &  sharing in communities.  Tonia DiRisio is a visual artist  and arts administrator. Her work has developed through ongoing investigations of the growing, making, preserving, celebrating, and sharing of food.

Studios/Facilities Details

There are no dedicated traditional indoor studio facilities.

We ask that applicants consider how they plan to embrace the outdoors as the primary workspace.

Workspace is outside in the open air of the garden, on the porch at Poderi Borselli, in the garden of Il Miccio pizzeria pub (on the street leading to the top of the village), on walks, on the village overlook, in the piazzas of neighboring towns, or inside the apartments or house (small works, writing). Even when working inside, the orientation is to the outside through windows and doors that move the gaze to the land, weather, light, and stars.

Indoor working space at Poderi Borselli is reserved for residents as needed.

If working indoors or outdoors, all activities must adhere to a strict “leave no trace,” “leave no harm” green policy. Please consider scale and materials.
