Additional Accessibility Information
  • Mobility: Our residency takes place in a village that is over 800 years old and was built on a mountainside at approximately 365m above sea level. Unfortunately, many parts of the village are only accessible by footpaths (sometimes uneven) or stairs. The living quarters of Casa Trinacria can only be accessed by stairs. Unfortunately, this makes the residency unsuitable for individuals with limited mobility or wheelchair users.
  • Distance: The village of Pezzolo is separated from surrounding towns by a winding drive up a mountain road. This road is 7km long and takes approx. 15 - 20 minutes to drive. It may be challenging for inexperienced drivers or those who experience motion sickness.
  • Medical Facilities: The nearest medical facility is the Policlinico Hospital in Messina, approximately 20 km away (about a 30–40 minute drive, depending on road conditions).
  • Amenities: There is only one business remaining open in Pezzolo, which is a small butcher shop. The butcher shop also stocks a few other dry goods, such as pasta, rice, canned goods, beer, cleaning supplies, and other necessities. There is also a small pharmacy which operates on very limited hours. For all other amenities (such as grocery stores, supply shops, post office, ATM, etc.), it is necessary to drive to nearby towns, a drive which takes at least 15 - 20 min in both directions.
  • Wildlife: There are several colonies of feral cats living in Pezzolo. Other local wildlife include small lizards and geckos. Mosquitos are common in the summer. Less commonly seen, but still present in the local area, are garden snakes, hedgehogs, bats, owls, and even occasionally wild boar.
  • Heat: Summer in Sicily is extremely dry, hot, and sunny. Shoulder seasons provide milder, more temperate weather. No matter the time of year, hydration and sun protection are essential. Artists are always encouraged to always pack refillable water bottles, sunscreen, and protective coverings such as hats. Tap water in Pezzolo is potable, and there are additional public drinking fountains throughout the village, directly from fresh mountain spring sources, where bottles can be refilled.
  • Internet Connection: Please note that there is no Wi-Fi provided, and cell phone service can be spotty. We encourage participants to embrace this as an “unplugged” opportunity to focus, reflect, and immerse themselves in the unique environment.

An image of a beach with a reflective lake to the right at sunset. The word "Awakening" has been overlaid.

Awakening Residency (aka ArtWitch camp)

This year, we will continue with our esoteric study and understanding of how the elements, witchcraft and creativity converge and diverge. Please bring your copy of the Awakening Tarot because it is the basis for our exploration.

To celebrate the inaugural year of the Obsidian Academy of Esoteric Arts, all confirmed 2025 Awakening participants will be gifted a 2-month free membership to the Obsidian Inner Sanctum online Coven when signing up for membership.

Awakening is an intensive and immersive 7-day thematic residency open to all professional and emerging artists of all disciplines.  The residency will be of particular interest to those who work with the five elements of earth, air, fire, water and spirit, and who wish to connect to the idea of the ‘witch’ in both a historical and contemporary context. People of colour, diverse gender identifications, and all abilities are encouraged to apply and will receive priority acceptance.

This program has been designed to provide a sacred and inspirational space for seekers to explore their own practice within the elemental framework of earth, air, fire, water and spirit. The objective is to engage holistic practices to connect our authentic self with our environment and to incorporate metaphysical practices within creative self-expression. Finding agency through voice, decolonization, global environmental concerns, socio-political and economic factors which affect our ability to be open about our spiritual practice in the arts, etc.

Sheepscot Arts Preserve

Alna, ME, United States

Sheepscot Arts Preserve is a new artist residency center that is dedicated to supporting Visionary, Outsider and Narrative (Visual) Artists of all disciplines with an emphasis on visual artists. We are located on 42 beautiful acres bordering the Sheepscot River in Alna, Maine. The center provides group and individual artist residencies, free of cost. We also provide some, to all, of the meals depending on the type of residency you attend. We especially encourage self-taught artists and marginalized artists to apply but welcome everyone who feels as if our residency is the right fit.

Our housing includes year round yurts, an off-grid cabin, and bedrooms in the 1800's farmhouse. Each artist has their own studio space to work and access to all communal areas on the property. Our studio spaces change depending on the needs of the artists in residence but are located throughout the different buildings on the property, including the yurts and the large timber frame barn. We are in a quiet rural area and  have hiking trails that wind throughout the property.

We offer stipends to offset the cost of travel/loss of work for those who can't attend without one.

We have a suggested donation to cover our costs but our program is free to all, and your choice of donation is not part of our selection process.

Walking & Art: More Discussions At The Wayside

Contemporary art has a long-established and well-documented relationship to walking. Whether used as a technique for drawing lines on the Earth, or a way of asserting collective sovereignty on stolen land, walking is now accepted as one of the many ways that artists make work. It is also, and equally, deployed as a method in neighbouring disciplines within the arts, humanities and social sciences. As such, it is always subject to new academic and cultural “turns” as they emerge.

Walking is also intrinsic to many of the quotidian, spiritual, philosophical, social and political aspects of our lives and provokes myriad questions for us as artists. We acknowledge that there are archetypal conventions of “walking art” that do not adequately represent the extent of interest or investment in walking as a practice, or the questions that walking may invoke for artists right now.

This residency is open to any, and all, approaches to walking as art, and encourages participants to grapple with the questions that arise for all those who have a stake in this area of artistic practice.

This residency gives you the opportunity to bring these questions to the fore, and to work through them, in practical ways, among your peers. We invite you to share insights and experiences, and to address with us the questions that arise from your practice with us, and with other participants. We encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities presented for working beyond the studios.

Alchemy 2025 Artist Residency

ALCHEMY is an artist-led international residency offered to make time and space for participants to explore the intersection between creative and social practices in a unique community setting.

Founded in 2015 on the Toronto Islands, Alchemy’s pillars are food, art, garden and table — all inspired by the original gardens and community at the Centre. Shared meals, artist talks, studio visits, and dialogue with community members and guest artists all contribute to a magical inspiring time in as magical setting. This Residency is designed for artists to focus on their practice in a respectful and supportive studio environment. Participating artists will be encouraged to cultivate new directions in their work, experiment with process and materiality techniques, and direct their research, activities, and time in collaboration with other visiting artists.

Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts is a peaceful artist retreat nestled against the magnificent backdrop of Toronto Island – the largest car-free community in North America and 15 minutes by ferry to Toronto’s downtown core.

Long Term, Live/Work Residency in New Orleans

New Orleans, LA, United States

This is a live/work residency that is embedded in a small (9-room) hospitality business called Travelers New Orleans. New Orleans, like most cities, has become increasingly unaffordable for artists and others who seek to live creatively. At Travelers New Orleans, artists are provided housing on the third (top) level of a light-filled three-bedroom, two-bath apartment in the Lower Garden District neighborhood. A fourth room is available for office/limited studio space. Artists help run the hospitality business by committing to work about 15 (paid) hours per week, and the hospitality business, in turn, funds the residency. Hours may vary depending on season, but 15 is a solid average. Artists are encouraged to create onsite (there are some space limitations) and there are opportunities to showcase work in the lobby gallery, which looks on out world-famous Magazine Street. The goal of this residency is to provide an affordable, creative, supportive environment for artists at any stage of their careers.
