Mattering Worlds: Media Art in More-Than-Human Ethics and Ecologies

Yerevan, Armenia

Mattering Worlds is an international media art residency exploring artistic practice in relation to more-than-human ecologies, technological infrastructures, and environmental transformation. Hosted by Ars Techne in Armenia, the program brings together artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners working across disciplines such as media art, sound, bioart, speculative design, and critical technology studies.

The residency supports research-driven and process-based artistic work that engages with ecological responsibility, situated knowledge, and experimental forms of collaboration. Participants are encouraged to develop projects that reflect on planetary conditions, local contexts, and the entanglements between human and non-human agencies. Rather than focusing solely on production, the program emphasizes dialogue, field inquiry, collective learning, and public engagement.

Residents take part in workshops, site visits, reading sessions, and open studio moments, while also contributing to Ars Techne’s public program through talks, presentations, or small-scale interventions. The residency aims to foster meaningful exchange between international and local communities, strengthen interdisciplinary networks, and create space for critical reflection on how artistic practices can respond to contemporary ecological and technological challenges.

Virtual Art Residency Program about: Our Land, Ocean, Atmos-fear, Sustainability

There are four virtual residency programs: Ocean, Our Earth, “Atmos-fear,” and Sustainability.

They focus on topics such as ocean conservation, sustainability and rooted communities, memory, territory, the earth, and climate.

They are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and are supported as an endorsed activity by the United Nations Decade of the Ocean.

There are 4 programs in support of and committed to UNESCO’s environmental and humanistic goals.

We guide residents so they can focus on working on a project for 6 weeks through virtual meetings (1 per week), exchange dialogue and ideas with other residents (of all nationalities), participate in talks with special guests related to science and ancestral perspectives, and thus enhance their work.

We hold a virtual Open Studio and an exhibition on a virtual map to conclude each program.

Oak Spring Fellowship for Distinction in Fine Crafts and Design 2027

Upperville, VA, United States

In 2027, Oak Spring will award its inaugural Fine Crafts and Design Fellowship to an early-career craftsperson or designer whose work demonstrates exceptional skill, artistic vision, and meaningful engagement with the natural world. This fellowship celebrates the intersection where form meets function, while honoring the aesthetics, material integrity, and craftsmanship at the heart of fine craft and design. The fellowship is intent- and inspiration-focused, rather than outcome-focused, meaning that we seek artists whose work is consistent with the objectives of the fellowship, without an expectation that they complete a prescribed project while at Oak Spring.

This fellowship is generously supported by Tiffany & Co. in honor of their lasting association with Mrs. Mellon and especially with the jewelry designer Jean Schlumberger.

The fellowship also honors the legacy of our founder Rachel “Bunny” Mellon – an avid gardener, patron, and collector – whose discerning eye and deep appreciation for exquisite design are reflected in her collaborations with artists such as Jean Schlumberger, Hubert de Givenchy, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and Diego Giacometti. Ideal applicants will demonstrate a commitment to material exploration, sustainability, and/or reimagining traditional techniques in innovative ways.

Additional Eligibility Information

This fellowship is open to early-career* artists and designers working in the fields of fine craft, applied design, or interdisciplinary material practice. They must demonstrate exceptional skill, artistic promise, and a self-directed approach to creative practice. Ideal candidates will be excited by the opportunity to think deeply, experiment conceptually, or develop new ideas in a rural setting with limited maker facilities. They will also value the opportunity to interact with the Oak Spring community, and join a cohort of residents from varying disciplines, including researchers and scientists. International applicants are welcome, but the fellowship is conducted in English and international applicants are responsible for procuring the necessary visas as needed.

*Early career artists and designers will have a demonstrated track record of exhibitions or commissions, but will have not yet received national or international recognition. Indicators we will use to assess eligibility include: educational background, group shows, juried exhibitions, prior residencies, grants or other indicators of esteem. Most important will be the portfolio of prior work samples.

The $10,000 individual grant associated with this award can be put towards travel to and from OSGF, materials and supplies purchased for the residency, and other items that will support their work, before or after their stay at OSGF.

The selected Fellow should make travel arrangements to Dulles International Airport, from where Oak Spring will arrange ground transportation to the former Mellon estate in Upperville, VA. The Fellow will be housed in nicely appointed shared accommodations. The Fellow will have a private bedroom and bathroom, and share a living room and kitchen with 1 – 3 other Residents or Fellows.

Oak Spring does not currently have dedicated maker facilities (e.g., kilns, looms, a woodshop, or metal studio). As such, this fellowship is best suited for artists and designers who are self-sustaining in the materials they will need for their work, who will benefit from time for ideation, research, and incubation, and who can make productive use of:

  • A private studio workspace,
  • Access to the Oak Spring Library and other special collections,
  • Direct connection to our sustainably managed landscape and gardens,
  • A community of fellows across artistic and scientific disciplines.

This residency offers uninterrupted time to explore new directions, deepen existing work, or engage with the ecological and horticultural context of Oak Spring.

nWilderHaven Artist Residency (WHAR)

The WilderHaven Artist Residency aims to gather artists, musicians, writers, scholars and local artisans, cultivating a space where creative minds converge to explore, experiment, and connect. In an era marked by a deepening awareness of individuality and the pursuit of freedom, WHAR serves as a sanctuary for interdisciplinary practices. As artists navigate foreign lands and cultures, their work becomes a bridge between traditions and contemporary thought, contributing to a broader understanding of existence and the ever-evolving relationship between art, science, politics, economics, and spirituality.

Residency Structure

  • Cohort Size: 8-14 artists per season, representing diverse media and career stages.
  • Program Length: 2-week or 4 week stays (4 weeks strongly encouraged for a fully immersive experience).
  • Key Events:
    1. Open-Format Artist Presentations (mid-season)
    2. Public Open Studio (final weekend)

Support & Flexibility

To keep fees accessible and creative freedom high, our team:

Dream Factory Sound Sanctuary

Dream Factory Sound Sanctuary

Dream Factory Sound Sanctuary (DFSS) is a nonprofit artist residency and recording studio located in the quiet high desert of Southern California. Our residency program supports musicians, composers, producers, and sound artists seeking a focused environment to create, learn, explore, and deepen their craft.

We host one resident artist at a time for immersive stays. Residency length is typically 2–3 weeks, with some flexibility depending on the artist’s goals and schedule.

Each residency includes lodging, daily meals, full access to a professional recording studio, and a large library of acoustic and electronic instruments. Residents also have the option to work closely with an experienced studio engineer who can support both technical and creative development—whether the focus is recording and production, learning the fundamentals, or experimenting without pressure to complete an album or release.

The program is designed to reduce common barriers to creative growth by offering dedicated studio time, guidance when desired, and a peaceful natural setting that supports deep concentration. Dream Factory’s instrument collection and studio environment invite both traditional workflows and exploratory sound practices.

The surrounding desert landscape provides quiet and spaciousness; many artists weave in reflection, nature walks, and personal practices alongside studio work. DFSS is supported by community donations and partnerships that help us offer residencies with minimal financial

Additional Eligibility Information

Dream Factory Sound Sanctuary welcomes musicians, composers, producers, and sound artists working across a wide range of musical traditions and practices. Artists may apply at any stage of their creative development, from emerging musicians exploring recording and production for the first time to experienced artists seeking a focused environment to create new work.

Applicants should have a genuine interest in engaging with the residency experience and making meaningful use of the studio environment. Projects may include recording music, developing compositions, exploring experimental sound practices, learning aspects of music production, or pursuing creative research and artistic growth.

We encourage applications from artists working in acoustic, electronic, experimental, interdisciplinary, and culturally rooted musical traditions. Both solo artists and small collaborative projects may be considered, depending on the scope of the residency.

Because Dream Factory Sound Sanctuary hosts one resident at a time and provides close interaction with the studio environment, applicants should be comfortable working independently while also engaging collaboratively with staff when appropriate.

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and communities and encourage artists whose work contributes to cultural exchange, artistic experimentation, and the thoughtful exploration of sound and music.

Anita Wetzel Residency Grant

Anita Wetzel Residency Grant

Anita Lynn Wetzel was the founding spirit of Women’s Studio Workshop. In her life and in her art she epitomized generosity and grace. Anita was a true humanist, in one with nature. In honor of Anita’s legacy, her friends and WSW are establishing the Anita Wetzel Residency Grant at Women’s Studio Workshop. The Anita Wetzel Residency Grant is a new opportunity focused on mature artists (45 years old and up) to create new work and fully immerse themselves in WSW’s supportive environment. This residency gives artists the necessity of time and space, 4-6 weeks, to live and work away from the stresses of daily life. Artists may choose to work in any one or more of our studios: intaglio, letterpress, papermaking, screen printing, or darkroom photography.

This residency is fully subsidized. WSW provides housing and studio space at no cost. Additionally, the selected artist will receive a stipend of $350/week, up to $500 for materials used during the residency, and up to $250 toward travel within the Continental US. Artists receive a thorough studio orientation and are expected to work independently, although studio staff is available to provide assistance. Deep technical assistance can be arranged for an additional fee. The artist is responsible for any other expenses such as meals and incidentals while in residence.

Orein Arts Residency

Pine City, NY, United States

The Monastery Arts Residency brings artists and writers to live, create, and seek beauty for a week under summer skies at Mount Saviour Monastery near Elmira, NY. It is the only arts residency in the world that takes place at an active Catholic monastery.

The week is a unique blend of solitude and community. During the day, residents work independently on their own creative projects, with access to over 1,000 acres of monastery grounds and sheep fields. In the evening, the group gathers for programming, work sharing, and community time. The residency is deliberately interdisciplinary, bringing together twelve to fifteen painters, writers, musicians, actors, and other artists per session.

The rhythm of the week is shaped by the monks' daily prayers, the Divine Office. No one is obligated to attend, though all are invited. There is limited cell service and Wi-Fi. The silence, the land, and the monastic schedule quietly reorganize how residents experience time, attention, and their own creative work.

Residents live in private single rooms in the monastery guesthouse. Meals are included and taken with the monks. Visual artists share a studio in the monastic crafts building; writers and musicians have access to the library, practice rooms, and a monastery piano.

Two sessions run each summer, Monday afternoon through Sunday morning. All residents must commit to the full week. Artists of all faith backgrounds, or none, are welcome.

Do I seek contemplation but also value community?

This residency consists of silence, space, nature, work, bells, chanting, and calm gatherings. It is rustic and rather off-the-grid. Our model is based on contemplation and creativity, not on workshops or masterclasses. As noted above, for most of the day artists will be free and entirely self-directed, while during our evening gatherings, the most “social” time, we emphasize community and give one another a share of our attention and time. If you are coming here to be left completely alone for a week with your work and not interact with others, this not the residency for you.

Am I cool being around monks? Can I handle people talking about God?
There will be a lot of Catholic monks walking around. People will be talking about God. It is at a monastery, after all. We are looking for artists and practitioners who would take advantage of and appreciate such an environment as described here, who would see such a week as an opportunity and a blessing for their creative and spiritual life.

Do I need to be a Catholic or Christian artist?

No. Artists do not have be Catholic or Christian to be at home here—in fact many of those who come aren’t—but we of course have the expectation that all will be respectful of the faith and the rules and customs of the monks and the monastery, as well as commit to doing their part in creating and maintaining a harmonious and compassionate community.

Do I need to be a professional artist?

Professional? No. Practicing? Yes. Artists at any stage in their career or in various disciplines are welcome to apply. We will see in your application the extent to which you take your practice seriously.

So far we have been best able to accommodate:
Songwriters, poets, translators, textile artists, fiction writers, plein air painters, pianists, clowns, collage artists, actors, mixed-media artists, film makers, composers, performance artists, folk-musicians, essayists and art teachers...

Materials:

  • Letter of Application (max. 600 words) — Write us a letter. This is the main way you will introduce yourself and your practice (both artistic and spiritual). Make it specific, honest and personal. Let us know the reasons behind your desire to come to THIS residency, in a small community at a contemplative Catholic monastery, beyond just "time and space" to work, which is offered by most any other creative residency. Talk about your ability and willingness to both work alone and be part of a community. Let us know what excites you, what you hope to work on, explore, encounter, or investigate during your time here. Tell us anything really to help give us a sense of who you are and how our time together could be fruitful. Again: do NOT send us a general letter that is not specifically tailored to this residency. Upload on a .pdf on the application platform.

  • Work Sample / Portfolio — We are looking for seriousness and quality. We leave the quantity/media to your discretion depending on what discipline you work in: some pages of writing, images of work, link to bandcamp, your EPK, youtube link of a dance performance, etc. If you wish (not required) this is the place to include a brief artist’s statement and/or include any pertinent information if needed to help us better understand the work. Upload on application platform.

  • CV / Resume — A brief artist’s CV or resume outlining recent publications, past and upcoming shows, studio experience, accomplishments, honors, etc. If you are an emerging artist who doesn’t have a long professional resume, that is ok. Send us whatever you got. Upload a .pdf on the application platform.

  • Application fee — Before submitting, you will be asked to pay an application fee. The suggested amount is $30, however you are free to input any amount above $10 according to your situation. This non-refundable fee will be put towards paying our readers and scholarships for other artists. If you have more to contribute beyond the suggested amount, we thank you for your commitment to supporting fellow artists.

  • Additional things to recall — Applicants must be able to stay the full length of their session. There is no wifi. Pets, partners, children are not to accompany you. Cell phone service is limited. The monastery is an entirely smoke and drug-free campus with the exception of responsible alcohol consumption. There will be a bunch of Catholic monks around and people talking about God.

Program Rates for Summer 2026

Full Residency Rate: $1250
Discount Tier 1: $1000
Discount Tier 2: $825
               +
Brother Justin Fellowship: $350

Why Tiered Pricing?

We hope to welcome artists at various stages of career and income levels. For this reason, we use tiered pricing that allows artists to choose the cost that is most appropriate to their situation. We raise funds during the year to help underwrite these tiered discounts.

The full cost of the residency is $1250. If you are in a position to pay the full residency fee, we ask for your honesty and respect to select this tier. It helps give opportunities to other artists in our community. What is better than artists supporting fellow artists? Otherwise, please self-select one of the discount tiers in accordance with your financial situation. All applicants of these three tiers will be considered in one main applicant pool and the selecting won't effect chances of acceptance. There is a seperate pool for the Br. Justin Fellowship; see below.

Brother Justin Fellowship

We are excited and proud to offer this tier, as we recognize that even the $825 discount tier is a stretch for many artists. For those artists in need of even deeper support, we offer the Br. Justin Fellowship, a special $350 artist’s contribution tier, thanks to our generous donors. These fellowships are limited to only a few artists each session, and therefore these applicants will be considered in a different pool. You will select on your application which pool you’d like to be placed in.

Our fellowship is named after Br. Justin Young. Br. Justin was a beautiful, creative, energetic monk at Mt. Saviour. He was deeply tuned to beauty and creativity, with degrees in Fine Art and Theater, and was our biggest champion when we first proposed the residency to Mt. Saviour in 2018. He passed away suddenly a few months before our first session at the monastery, but we know he has been and continues to be with us. We like to think of Br. Justin as our unofficial patron saint!

Grant/Scholarship/Other Funding Support Details

See above. We don't offer support in the form of directly granting the artists money, but we offer discounts on the tuition. We use tiered pricing that allows artists to choose the cost that is most appropriate to their situation. We raise funds during the year to help underwrite these tiered discounts & fellowships.

Carolȳnne Whitefeather Regional Residency Grant

Carolȳnne Whitefeather Regional Residency Grant

Kingston, NY, United States

The Carolȳnne Whitefeather Regional Grant is a month-long residency for artists residing in Greene, Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, and Orange counties. This opportunity has been named by the funder to honor the artist’s significant and innovative contributions to the field of printmaking.

Whitefeather’s work reshaped the medium of screen-printing by pioneering water-based, non-toxic, and archival processes that expanded serigraphy’s possibilities as fine art. This material innovation was inseparable from the development of a distinct visual language grounded in artisan practice. Drawing from North Florida’s cultural and ecological diversity, Carolȳnne Whitefeather’s art engages the oral traditions and natural surroundings of the artist’s youth. Immersed among Seminole elders and descendants of European and First Peoples near Tallahassee, the artist channels the layered heritage of forests, rivers, and prairies into a diverse practice. The inaugural Carolȳnne Whitefeather Regional Grant will commence in 2026, following in the footsteps of the Ora Schneider Artist in Residency Program (2006–2024), and will continue to provide opportunities for regional artists.

WSW will award this residency to one artist, who may choose to work independently in any of our studio disciplines. Priority will be given to artists with experience and a working knowledge of etching or monoprint; letterpress; papermaking; or screenprinting.
