Thematic residency program in Finland for artists, writers and creative minds attuned to the theme. 
The program brings together creative individuals from different backgrounds. Artistic, scientific, meditative and existentialistic approaches are all equally embraced.

Taking place at the heart of the Northern winter, the conditions are excellent for creative contemplation, solitary introspection, concentrating intensively on your work, thinking and being, as well as for sharing experiences and ideas with other, similarly oriented minds. There is no pressure to have a concrete productive outcome, in case your focus is more in inner development, self-reflection and research. All participation in group activities is voluntary.

Anita Lynn Wetzel was the founding spirit of Women’s Studio Workshop. In her life and in her art she epitomized generosity and grace. Anita was a true humanist, in one with nature. In honor of Anita’s legacy, her friends and WSW are establishing the Anita Wetzel Residency Grant at Women’s Studio Workshop. The Anita Wetzel Residency Grant is a new opportunity focused on mature artists (45 years old and up) to create new work and fully immerse themselves in WSW’s supportive environment. This residency gives artists the gift of time, 4-6 weeks, to live and work away from the stresses of daily life. Artists may choose to work in any one or more of our studios: intaglio, letterpress, papermaking, screen printing, darkroom photography, or ceramics. This residency is fully subsidized. WSW provides housing and studio space at no cost. Additionally, the selected artist will receive a stipend of $350/week, up to $500 for materials used during the residency, and up to $250 toward travel within the Continental US. Artists receive a thorough studio orientation and are expected to work independently, although studio staff is available to provide assistance. Deep technical assistance can be arranged for an additional fee. The artist is responsible for any other expenses such as meals and incidentals while in residence.

WSW has been making quality handmade papers since 1979. Our Papermaking studio is designed for sheet-forming processes, low relief, and three-dimensional work.

In 1999, WSW began the ArtFarm program, which allows us to grow our own fibers  for hand papermaking. Through ArtFarm we’ve now tested over one hundred native and invasive species for their fiber strength, coloring capacity, print worthiness, and translucency.

The Studio Grant is a six- to eight-week residency for artists to create new work in any of our studio disciplines: intaglio, letterpress, papermaking, screenprinting, photography, or ceramics. WSW invites applications from artists at any stage in their careers.

This grant includes a stipend of $350/week, up to $500 for materials used during the residency, up to $250 for travel within the Continental US, free onsite housing, and 24/7 studio access. WSW can also provide technical advice and production assistance.

This residency has a two-step jury process: a rotating, impartial jury selects the finalists and then WSW applies for NEA funding for the chosen projects.

Nonprofit Management Internship

You’ll work under the leadership of WSW’s Operations staff and gain experience by working alongside the administrative team of an established nonprofit arts organization. You will, among other things, undertake projects relating to public relations, fundraising, event planning, and arts administration. All internships include a private room in WSW’s on-campus Anne Atwood House and a stipend of $600/month. Interns work 40 hours/week, generally Monday through Friday, 9:00-5:00, but the schedule may change to accommodate the Workshop’s programming. Interns have access to the studios for their own work outside of regular working hours and with respect to studio programming. The internship session culminates in a group exhibition of work created during the term.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Short- and long-term marketing initiatives for email, direct mail, and social media
  • Maintaining WSW’s web presence on community calendars and across our media listings
  • Writing assignments, such as press releases and blog posts
  • Providing administrative support by processing memberships and donations, assisting in database work, managing email & phone communications, processing resident applications for jury review, and fulfilling artists’ book orders
  • Performing studio/office upkeep, including housing turnover, potluck setup and breakdown, and more

Since our founding in 1974, Women’s Studio Workshop has been a professional artist studio dedicated to the creation of community, opportunity, empowerment, and development for women artists in all stages of their careers.  As we continue to serve this mission, we believe that we can honor our core values and address gender equity more fully by explicitly expanding our concept of gender beyond patriarchal frames of reference. 

WSW supports all women and trans, intersex, nonbinary and genderfluid people in residencies and internships. Classes, studio rentals, and public events are open to all.

WSW has been making quality handmade papers since 1979. Our Papermaking studio is designed for sheet-forming processes, low relief, and three-dimensional work.

In 1999, WSW began the ArtFarm program, which allows us to grow our own fibers  for hand papermaking. Through ArtFarm we’ve now tested over one hundred native and invasive species for their fiber strength, coloring capacity, print worthiness, and translucency.

Corsicana Artist and Writer Residency advances the production and presentation of new work and ideas by an international community of artists and writers by providing an arena of generous support and historic space.

Fifty miles south of Dallas, this residency takes place in the historic downtown of Corsicana, where two oil booms in the 1890s to 1920s produced an exuberant architectural setting. Historic buildings declined in care and use by the late-20th century, alongside the general compromise of small-town America. Corsicana Artist and Writer Residency affords creative re-use of these preserved sites, soaked in their unaltered space, light and proportion. Anchored by 100 West, a former Odd Fellows Lodge, this collection of sites becomes a cultural campus providing artists and writers meaningful interaction with the community and its history as a springboard for research and creative production. We champion innovative and engaged studio practices and writing, while facing outward in partnerships for education, exhibition and publication designed to develop transformative dialogue with audiences near and far.

The unique history and cultural landscape of Corsicana lies at the intersection of economic change and the collection of diverse races and religious histories throughout that change. This residency is uniquely positioned to engage and respond to this landscape through its support for creative production.

Accepted applicants who commit to a residency term are responsible for a one-time, non-refundable $200 Administration Fee paid to the residency before November 1, 2022. Residents incur no additional costs to attend.

Travel, meal and research expenses are not covered.

Grant/Scholarship/Other Funding Support Details

Funding is extended to all accepted applicants and satisfies all studio and housing accommodations, following the paid $200 Administration Fee. Residents do not receive funding in the form of direct payment. Instead, funding is absorbed by the residency, and granted to residents by providing generous accommodations for studio and domestic space and residency programming. The value of funding per resident per two-month term is estimated between $4,000 and $6,000, depending on writer or artist studio accommodations and programing.

The kitchen, dining living rooms and shower room are shared between three residents on the 2nd floor of 100 West. Each resident has a private bathroom adjacent to their studio with sink and toilet. The writing studio has an additional, private bathtub. The kitchen is fully equipped with standard appliances, basic spices and utensils. Residents are provided extra-long twin beds, pillows, sheets, blankets, bath towels, and necessary closet space for personal belongings and clothes.

Artists and writers coming to Corsicana escape compact, urban centers to make work without distraction.  It's quiet here.  Long hours are clocked in the studio with a focus stimulated by small-town atmosphere and big, open windows. Fixtures like easels, worktables, seating, bed frames and the spiral staircase accessing our roof are all made within the building, for the building.

Occasionally guests from Texas’ creative community, galleries, museums and friends are invited for studio visits and to expand dinner conversation.

Corsicana’s historic downtown offers diners, coffee shops, parks, grocery stores and hardware shops in safe walking distance, so cars are not necessary - although bicycles are available. Our local community extends across the street from 100W and throughout downtown Corsicana with several private live-work studios of this program’s founders. Transportation is generally accommodated with complimentary drives to and from the nearest airports like Dallas’ Love Field Airport one hour north of Corsicana, and Dallas-Fort-Worth International Airport one-and-a-half hours northwest of Corsicana.

The Buinho Residency program is directed at creatives and researchers from different backgrounds.

Buinho creative hub opened in Alentejo (Southern region of Portugal) with the support of a curatorial team with over ten years of experience in the organization support of other residency programs in Portugal.

Since 2016, Buinho has been successfully growing the number of applications making it a sought-after artistic residency program. Today Buinho is a European reference for being among the only artistic residencies based on a Fablab that enhances creative experimentation.

We started with only one house which accommodated two residents and the fablab, but today we have three houses, shared and individual studios, the digital fabrication workshop, and exhibition spaces. And finally, together with the local municipality, we now also offer access to a metalworking workshop dedicated to sculpture and plastic recycling.

We have since then received visual artists, performance artists, photographers, curators, writers, sculptors, designers, media artists, confirming the eclectic nature of our program.

Buinho is one of the very first rural FabLabs in Portugal, that provides artists with endless possibilities for experimentation. Additional Eligibility Information

Artists interested in participating should send by email (info@buinho.pt) a short curriculum, motivation letter and description of the project. Equally important is to mention the proposed dates for the residency (start and length).

Applications are evaluated by an advisory committee and take into consideration the following parameters:

a) artistic quality;

b) relevance of the project;

c) motivation of the candidate.



Our AIR program values multidisciplinarity, so we expect the acceptance of creatives from different backgrounds, media, and experiences.  We also try to support emerging artists that seek opportunities for international visibility and curriculum. The level of scrutiny of the portfolio's quality is proportionate to the artist's experience. Although Buinho AIR residency program is self-funded in order to cover the operational expenses, we can offer special conditions to struggling artists, depending on the availability of spaces and relevance of the proposed project.

We do not have public or private funding for the residencies, and aside from the normal house bills and work consumables, we have a full-time person just for production support of the residencies. As such, we have to apply fees, but we do keep the fees to a minimum since we are a not-for-profit association based in a rural area.

We try to differentiate the value of the residency fees according to the characteristics of the accommodation since each house offers bedrooms and spaces with different dimensions and privacy. 

Monthly fees are the following:

1. São João larger bedroom with private bathroom - 900€;

2. São João other two bedrooms - 800€;

3. Joaquina's studio-house - 1000€;

4. Casa da Avo - 900€.

Accompanying person has a 50% discount but must share the accommodation. It is an additional measure to support couples, artists with children, or possible artistic collaborations.

The minimum duration of each residency is two weeks and the maximum is two months. Residencies should start either on the 1st or on the 15th of each month.

Please note that after the acceptance in Buinho AIR program, we will ask for an initial deposit of 50% of the total value of the stay. The remaining 50% is to be paid during the first week of residency. For payment of the deposit, the resident can choose either bank transfer or PayPal payment. Buinho will issue a receipt or send a formal acceptance letter if needed.

Cancellation requests with a full reimbursement of the deposit should be made by writing within 5 months before the start of the period of stay. All other cancellations will not result in the refund. Deposits are non-refundable and residency dates are non-transferable.

Buinho FabLab is divided into two main spaces:

- The workshop, which is equipped with CNC mills, two laser cutters, a resin 3D printer,vand various tools and machines for woodwork and prototyping.

- The studio which has several 3D Printers, vinyl cutter, sewing machines, several electronics and robotics equipment, controllers, 3D scanner, sensors, and other components to be used in creative

projects. The studio also offers several PC workstations, complemented by two iMacs with adequate software for graphic and product design.

The digital fabrication capabilities offered by the Fablab are complemented by an ecosystem of other technologies and devices that enable a creative and explorative immersion within the digital realms.

We also possess diverse educational equipment which is used primarily to support the educational mission of Buinho. It is also available for those residents that want to experiment with physical computing, interactive environments, sound, among others. It includes:

MicroControllers and electronic prototyping platforms- Arduinos, Raspberry Pi's, Microbits, LilyPad, MakeyMakey Robotic Kits - Mbot, Little Bits, Cubetto, Arduino based rovers (NiCo's) Electronic Bench - Variable power supply, oscilloscope, multimeter, soldering stations, calipers, precision tools, etc.



Electronic Components - Arduino sensors kits, conductors, resistors, capacitors, breadboards, jumpers, perfboards, DC motors, stepper motors, servo motors, etc



Other relevant equipment - Kinnect, Virtual Reality Head Mount, Leap Motion, Sewing Machine.

 

Precious Plastic (www.preciousplastic.com) is a global community composed by individuals and groups that are working towards a solution to plastic pollution. Knowledge, tools, and techniques are shared online, for free.



Our workspace is connected and spread through Messejana. The plastic waste is separated and deposited by the local's in specific points created by us, and then brought to the Plastic Recycling Center. There, a group of Buinho volunteers transform the plastic waste in raw material and use it to produce products that are given back to the local community.

The Buinho Precious Plastic is also a part of the makerspaces network, It is located in the local municipality workstation enabling users to work in metal and machine-building using specific

equipment and workspaces.

 

Besides all the technological and digital apparatus, Buinho also possesses art studios in all houses  where AiR can find the space and light to further develop their projects. We also provide heavy duty easels to those that require larger dimension canvas, and some material for painting from past residencies.

Since 2013, Soulangh Artist Village launched an art-in-residence program that aims to foster international exchange with artists from around the world and create a vibrant community of artists; local and international, emerging and established. Artists will be living in close proximity to local craftsmen artisans and are encouraged to take the community and vibrant local culture as inspiration for their art works. Artists have access to wheelchair accessible air-conditioned modern studio spaces, galleries and theatres for exhibitions, workshops and performances. 

To provide artists with a quality environment and to foster art exchange between Tainan and the international community, the Tainan City Government Cultural Affairs Bureau offers professional space for creation at Soulangh Cultural Park(SCP). Through diverse workshops, performances, and exhibitions, the program nurtures the art appreciation population in Tainan by interacting with the residents. It provides opportunities for creative exchange between domestic and international artists, intending to cultivate exceptional artists.

A. Program Provisions - what do we offer?

1. Placements of up to three months with free accommodation and studio space.

2. Living and working expenses in Taiwan (including 18% personal income-tax and insurance) - partly subsidized (NT$ 30,000 per month maximum). The total amount will be paid in two installments. Artists will receive payment directly, excluding any tax. Since 2016, the Taiwan government has announced that all terms of contract should include stamp-tax, which is one thousandth of the total amount. The stamp-tax should be paid in cash by the artists themselves, and this is excluded from the subsidy.

3. Presentation expenses - The maximum allocation is NT$ 100,000 (including tax), which will be paid directly to the relevant contractors. The above expenses include: providing a service or materials used in completing workshops, exhibitions and performances; fees for brochure design and printing, dissemination, art work insurance, translation fees, and expenses for a press conference, etc. Any transportation fees for works are excluded.

4. Administrative support.

The Rice Place residence is an historic rammed-earth house constructed in 1937 by Clyde Rice. The driveway is compacted gravel, and the main entry to the house has an approximately 4 inch high stone ledge one has to step onto as part of the landing, which do not meet ADA accessibility standards.  We have created a moveable ramp for the front door to make getting over the 4 inch high lip easier.  Also we do allow the parking of a car very close to the front entrance.  In short, we have had residents with accessibility issues and we pledge to work with any individual who needs reasonable accommodations that may make the Rice Place usable by them.  We request an email to ClydeRice@faegre.org to discuss what the needs are and then we can attempt to find an accommodation to those needs.

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

Once inside the house, the first floor living room, bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen are generally accessible. 

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

The upper floor has a non-standard stair with non-standard handrails and is thus much less accessible than ADA standards.  The property largely consists of old hay fields and near the river cottonwood trees and other riparian vegetation.  During the dry summer period these areas can be accessed by car or other motorized vehicles that are capable of travel without asphalt pavement.

WOWArtSci welcomes artists and scientists to explore their passions in a natural retreat setting with total quiet, dark skies (Bortle 2), and easy access to a vibrant, diverse, and historic community of artists and artisans. We are located on the Taos Volcanic Plateau aka 'The Mesa' - approximately 13 miles from downtown Taos, NM. 

We offer 11 day/10 night supported residencies with a small cash stipend.

Residents are housed in a private 900 sq. ft. Casita with kitchen and bath. To keep the Casita friendly for all of our future residents and guests we request that no toxic or perfumed chemicals be brought onto the property. 

Residents have private access to a small lofted barn studio 10'x12'. The studio has basic art supplies, a wash station, and large workbench. A list of available supplies will be provided before arrival. Residents can also work anywhere outside on our 20 acre property.

This is a rural and somewhat remote location with uneven ground, cantankerous weather, and high elevation. Please contact us with any accessibility questions or concerns.

Our residency is housed in a single level casita with one 3-4" inch step to enter the building. The pathways around the building are a mix of flagstone, and gravels of various sizes. The property is mostly flat to gently rolling sagebrush. The dirt is soft and has many critter holes. The driveways are large gravel. The residency is not wheelchair accessible at this time, and may be difficult for those with walkers/crutches to navigate safely. 

We will make every effort to accommodate as many people as possible into our residency. Please contact us directly with accessibility needs, questions, or concerns. We are always happy to give video/descriptive tours of the property for applicants to determine if it is suitable for them.

Casita is a single level 1 bedroom 1 bath with full kitchen and living room guesthouse. There is a large desk to work at as well as a small kitchen table. There is one 3-4" step up into the house, and the shower has a small lip. The casita is attached via a solarium to the main house (private) and there is a flagstone patio off of the solarium (shared).
