Marathons engage the practices of drawing, painting, and sculpture as direct methodologies for understanding one’s experience in the world. Open to artists of all levels, courses are taught daily in-person or virtually in real time from 9am–6pm ET. Participating artists are exposed to a wide range of process-driven approaches to making art, new visual languages, and experimentation, guided by extensive group and individual critiques. 

Marathons are offered five times a year: 10-day In-Person and Virtual Marathons are offered at the start of the Fall (September) and Spring (January) semesters and during Summer Session (June and July); Virtual 5-day Intersession Marathons are held mid-semester (November and March). 

The innovation and depth of these programs expand participants’ fluency with materials and lead to new ways of thinking that continue far beyond each program’s conclusion. Artists may also be interested in NYSS’ full-time Certificate program (in-person and virtual options).

The climate crisis is an urgent global concern. Self as Universe: Mending Our Collective Ecosystem Residencies at A Studio in the Woods invite artists to explore the connections within our collective ecosystems and use the power of imagination to heal the wounds in the relationship between ourselves and our communities. Southeast Louisiana’s land and inhabitants are continually scarred by the effects of environmental degradation. These injuries – the historical to the present – affect our bodies, families, communities, and cultures, as well as the land and its other creatures.  We encourage artists to guide our collective response as the caretakers and caregivers to our universe while bringing wisdom, integrity, optimism, and even humor to intentional and timely projects seeking transformation for our species and planet.

A 12-week program designed to bring creative minds from around the world to Manchester, NH. Experience an environment that allows creative freedom to discover, define, and refine your creative practice.

The program is designed to support emerging artists with a place to live for up to 3 months. During this time selected applicants can focus full-time on further developing their creative practice as they take steps to cross the bridge into becoming career professionals.

Selected applicants are provided a studio apartment with basic household amenities, heat, hot water, electricity & internet provided. Additionally, each artist is granted a $350 travel stipend and a $1600 stipend that covers food and art supplies.

Each residency concludes with an artist opening celebration. The Opening acts as a solo or duo exhibition to feature each artist’s developing works.  Our onsite event space is set up to feature your installations and presentations to the local community. AIR’s may also organize/host additional public events/programs (artist talks, community dinners, workshops, studio visits, etc.)

ALCHEMY: an artist-led international residency where food, art, and community come together.

Since 2015, Alchemy has invited artists to connect, collaborate, and reflect in two unique Canadian settings: the Toronto Islands and Prince Edward County. Guided by four pillars—food, art, garden, and table—we document and share art making, meals, and conversation. At Alchemy, artists deepen their practices, exchange ideas, and engage with the people, communities and landscapes that host us.

A community setting for inquiry and discovery

 Through community engagement and commitment to a collaborative process, we collect, tell, and document multiple stories showcasing what compels people to continue to create, grow, farm, and live in two unique communities.

Shared meals, readings and discussions probe the creative intersection of food & art in a community setting & help us better understand the magic & inspiration created by making & sharing art & food.

This residency is for those practicing visual arts, sculpture, photography, craft, food,  performance art, writing, music, and video.

Coordinators:   Claire Tallarico, is a visual artist and chef whose practice explores the everyday rituals of art & food making &  sharing in communities.  Tonia DiRisio is a visual artist  and arts administrator. Her work has developed through ongoing investigations of the growing, making, preserving, celebrating, and sharing of food.

Come to the heart of the White Mountains to nurture the sources of your creativity and let this residency influence your projects the way the headwaters of these mountain streams carve the landscape on their way to the Atlantic.

The White Mountains of New Hampshire have forever inspired artists and writers. Check out Thomas Cole or Henry David Thoreau. But the art scene is alive and evolving. While you'll find yourself in a rural outpost, you can walk from the house to downtown Bethlehem, NH, where you can visit the local art gallery, see a concert at the small theater, or pour through pages at our iconic bookstore. A short drive will take you to countless trailheads. We (and previous residents) will recommend our favorite places to strike inspiration: the best river sits, sunset spots, jaw-dropping views, hikes, skis, and trees. We'll provide some hiking basics to get you outside (maps, guidebooks, poles, headlamps).
