Rising: Climate in Crisis Residencies at A Studio in the Woods invite artists to face the severity of the climate crisis and be agents of change to guide our collective understanding, response, and vision as we shape our shared future. New Orleans and the inhabitants of our region are frequently invoked as some of the most vulnerable to the effects of environmental degradation. While sea levels, temperatures and emotions are rising, our highly manipulated landscape can be seen as a microcosm of the global environment, manifesting both the reckoning and hope which are required in the ways humans interact with shifting urban and natural ecosystems. As the climate crisis permeates the collective understanding of the future, the challenges faced by Southern Louisiana resonate exponentially. We look to artists to ignite our imaginations, illuminate our challenges, and offer new ways to examine the world. Selected artist are provided with a $3000 stipend, $2000 materials budget, grocery reimbursement, 6 weeks of residency, and staff support.

The application is released annually in December with a March/April deadeline.

The Art Colony provides artists with self-guided work space in professional studios set on Minnesota’s North Shore. An environment of creative freedom supports the process and development of new works, allowing for a combination of aesthetic inquiry, creative risk-taking, experimentation, and artistic development. There are no outcome requirements.

At Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts & Agriculture, we work with artists, educators, researchers and Tribal members to support the long-term resilience of the local ecosystem. As stewards of the land, we rely on a deep understanding of the local ecology and the application of time-tested techniques to conserve natural resources and maintain the fertile conditions in which life can flourish. Understanding how different entities within the ecosystem interact and coexist at PMRCAA has allowed us to preserve the ranching tradition and maintain agricultural land. Our hope is to restore PMRCAA’s soil by understanding the diverse web of relationships responsible for maintaining its fertility.

By embracing a more expansive perspective that recognizes the power of diverse ways of knowing and being, we concern ourselves with how to instill ethical relations of production and explore the role artists, culture bearers, scientists, scholars, and researchers play in nourishing radical imagination and facilitating transformative change.

Prairie Ronde Artist Residency offers artists from a range of disciplines a 5 - 6 week residency in the historic village of Vicksburg, Michigan.

We offer a unique environment for our artists to develop their craft: the 420,000 square foot former Lee Paper Company mill and it’s adjacent 80 acres of property.

Prairie Ronde provides private housing, studio space and a stipend for one to two residents at a time. Our aim is to offer artists space and time to work, while also encouraging connection and dialogue with the community of Vicksburg.

The Artist’s Book Grant is a six- to eight-week residency for artists to produce a limited edition book work. Working intensively in our studios, artists print and bind their own books, and are encouraged to create an edition size no larger than 100 and no smaller than 50.The grant includes a stipend of $350/week, up to $750 for materials, up to $250 for travel within the Continental US, free onsite housing, and 24/7 studio access. WSW can provide technical advice; training on new equipment, techniques, and materials; and production assistance. The contract stipulates that 20% of the edition goes to WSW’s archive, exhibition, and display copies; 20% of the edition goes to the artist; and 60% of the edition goes to general sales. WSW has developed a series of archive and exhibition opportunities for our artists’ books, and artists can collaborate with WSW on marketing for a 50% commission fee.

Corsicana Artist and Writer Residency advances the production and presentation of new work and ideas by an international community of artists and writers by providing an arena of generous support and historic space.

Fifty miles south of Dallas, this residency takes place in the historic downtown of Corsicana, where two oil booms in the 1890s to 1920s produced an exuberant architectural setting. Historic buildings declined in care and use by the late-20th century, alongside the general compromise of small-town America. Corsicana Artist and Writer Residency affords creative re-use of these preserved sites, soaked in their unaltered space, light and proportion. Anchored by 100 West, a former Odd Fellows Lodge, this collection of sites becomes a cultural campus providing artists and writers meaningful interaction with the community and its history as a springboard for research and creative production. We champion innovative and engaged studio practices and writing, while facing outward in partnerships for education, exhibition and publication designed to develop transformative dialogue with audiences near and far.

The unique history and cultural landscape of Corsicana lies at the intersection of economic change and the collection of diverse races and religious histories throughout that change. This residency is uniquely positioned to engage and respond to this landscape through its support for creative production.

The Buinho Residency program is directed at creatives and researchers from different backgrounds.

Buinho creative hub opened in Alentejo (Southern region of Portugal) with the support of a curatorial team with over ten years of experience in the organization support of other residency programs in Portugal.

Since 2016, Buinho has been successfully growing the number of applications making it a sought-after artistic residency program. Today Buinho is a European reference for being among the only artistic residencies based on a Fablab that enhances creative experimentation.

We started with only one house which accommodated two residents and the fablab, but today we have three houses, shared and individual studios, the digital fabrication workshop, and exhibition spaces. And finally, together with the local municipality, we now also offer access to a metalworking workshop dedicated to sculpture and plastic recycling.

We have since then received visual artists, performance artists, photographers, curators, writers, sculptors, designers, media artists, confirming the eclectic nature of our program.

Buinho is one of the very first rural FabLabs in Portugal, that provides artists with endless possibilities for experimentation. Since 2013, Soulangh Artist Village launched an art-in-residence program that aims to foster international exchange with artists from around the world and create a vibrant community of artists; local and international, emerging and established. Artists will be living in close proximity to local craftsmen artisans and are encouraged to take the community and vibrant local culture as inspiration for their art works. Artists have access to wheelchair accessible air-conditioned modern studio spaces, galleries and theatres for exhibitions, workshops and performances. 

To provide artists with a quality environment and to foster art exchange between Tainan and the international community, the Tainan City Government Cultural Affairs Bureau offers professional space for creation at Soulangh Cultural Park(SCP). Through diverse workshops, performances, and exhibitions, the program nurtures the art appreciation population in Tainan by interacting with the residents. It provides opportunities for creative exchange between domestic and international artists, intending to cultivate exceptional artists. 

The Rice Place is an ongoing endeavor of the Friends of Clyde Rice. Clyde and Ginny Rice's historic home serves as a retreat for writers, artists, musicians, naturalists, and others who seek a safe haven in which to reflect and create.

WOWArtSci welcomes artists and scientists to explore their passions in a natural retreat setting with total quiet, dark skies (Bortle 2), and easy access to a vibrant, diverse, and historic community of artists and artisans. We are located on the Taos Volcanic Plateau aka 'The Mesa' - approximately 13 miles from downtown Taos, NM. 

We offer 11 day/10 night supported residencies with a small cash stipend.

Residents are housed in a private 900 sq. ft. Casita with kitchen and bath. To keep the Casita friendly for all of our future residents and guests we request that no toxic or perfumed chemicals be brought onto the property. 

Residents have private access to a small lofted barn studio 10'x12'. The studio has basic art supplies, a wash station, and large workbench. A list of available supplies will be provided before arrival. Residents can also work anywhere outside on our 20 acre property.

This is a rural and somewhat remote location with uneven ground, cantankerous weather, and high elevation. Please contact us with any accessibility questions or concerns.
