We are a non-profit organization dedicated to hosting visual artists and curators from all parts of the world to live and create in Athens, Greece, and the Bronx, New York —thereby facilitating a diverse influx of expression, production, and learning.

ARCAthens’ mission is to provide opportunity and support to Visual Artists, Curators, and Scholars to further their research to focus on bridging international dialogue, cooperation, and understanding.

A place to write and film and create. To find and renew creativity while surrounded by spiral-vined gardens, creaky wraparound porches and towering magnolias. To walk among the whispers of friendly ghosts and pastoral splendor. Quiet nights and productive, inspiring days, imaginative minds awakening, sweet music originating, the savory aroma of a country meal, the satisfaction of a finished page or canvas. The Bowers House Creative Retreat offers customized workspace for artists and academic residency programs in literature, music and some fine art disciplines. We are currently accepting applications for minimum one week group or single residencies, where baths and kitchens are shared and clean up is essential. Resident members agree to provide for film and audio programming a recap or focus of their creative work via readings, concerts, public performances interviews workshop directorships or lessons for BOWERS HOUR, the fundraising programming program that keeps the facility on a perpetual operation. Visiting guests may be present, and room and facility rentals keep the lights on in the 100 year old hotel, and cooperation and quiet consideration of work day time is observed by all who stay here. We welcome collaborative production and cosponsorship when possible with the missionl of one day being able to provide this opportunity to those who might night be otherwise able to have this residency experience.

The Lab’s mission is to provide a retreat-like work and living space to visual artists, scholars, curators, writers, composers, arts professionals and interdisciplinary thinkers drawn to exploring the relationship between visual art and the written word.  The Lab is named in honor of New Yorker cartoonist and New York Times columnist, James Stevenson and celebrates Stevenson’s working methodology as both a writer and visual artist.

Located in Cos Cob, CT, the Lab offers 3-4 week residences, and includes a $1000 stipend and access to an electric vehicle for limited residency use. The Lab is situated on a one-acre wooded property with expansive tree top vistas, and includes fire pit conversation areas and an open air patio available for use by the resident. Clerestories fill the facility with natural light, creating a silent and meditative treehouse-like feel on the upper level of the building.

Lost and Found Lab is a contemporary building inspired by Passivehaus design with radiant heat flooring throughout. Ground floor includes studio and living space, upper level includes a reading library, art gallery and full eat-in kitchen.

The residency works in partnership with local cultural institutions including the Beinecke Library in New Haven, providing residents with access to archival collections held at the library for those interested in utilizing such material as a source of inspiration.

One of the few things that was clear at the start of this pandemic was the fact that the format of the residencies as such, and the way we support artistic practices, needed to adapt and evolve. And this had to be done by all of us –individuals and institutions– united as a community. Together Apart emerged as a remote shelter for artistic practices that is a hybrid remote residency: part seminar, part workshop and part collaborative program:

• as a residency, it gives its participants the time and (mind) space to produce new bodies of work;
• as a seminar, it brings theoretical and conceptual resources that can be used by participants in their own practice;
• as a workshop, it puts the participants’ mind and body at work with exercises that are intended to stem from free interpretation and lead to unforeseeable results;
• as a collaborative program, it bonds individuals from different corners of the planet with diverse practices, all working in different mediums, between whom a strong community is built.

Together Apart also includes artist talks, toolboxes and feedback both from the ´ace team and from peers. Participants finish the program with a new body of work under the same theme, so that they can all explore a common idea but each in their own personal way. Because it doesn’t matter where we are, or if we can’t get physically together to think or produce our works, we know we are Together Apart.

Production Residencies (spanning for 4 weeks) support emerging and professional artists in the creation of new bodies of works, or the development of works in progress (including visual practices, performance art, sound art, and curating). Our residents work on all kinds of individual or collaborative projects proposed by themselves, producing with the support of the ´ace team and associated professionals who support the creative process through collective meetings and permanent feedback. Production Residencies may include a closing exhibition, a site-specific installation or an open studio format presentation to the local public.

The Palimpsest Project is a mural painting residency conceived as a “work in progress”. Recovering the word palimpsest's original meaning, our terrace becomes a living organism in which the artists paint their murals by dialoguing, intervening or overlapping with the previous ones. Palimpsesto is a project in constant mutation, in which artists are encouraged to superimpose their murals or interlace them with the previous ones, achieving a new awakening of what was already on the wall. More than an individual work, the murals express the superposition of many hands, residences and artists. These actions are considered a way to embrace and, at the same time, demystify the work of the other.

This residency program is aimed at career or emerging visual artists, with a special interest in muralism and/or urban art. Groups of up to 2 members can apply together to work collaboratively. In addition, in these residencies, there is the possibility of working collectively collaborating with other residents or local artists, as well as carrying out additional projects in mural festivals or in public spaces.

micro-Residencies are mainly aimed at starting a new project, delving into an ongoing project or finishing ideas/works. Each micro-Residency intends to be different, so that each resident develops their process according to their needs. ´ace provides space and professional assistance to create new works in a short but intense period of time, an ideal format for residents who belong to academic institutions or for those who do not have availability for long periods of time, since it allows them to venture into the world of residencies in a short and intensive period.

Exploration Residencies provide accompaniment, research resources and local contacts for carrying out projects. All of our residents-in-Exploration Residency receive tutoring and mentoring, accompaniment and work critiques from the ´ace team and specialized professionals, while they enrich themselves by being in contact with their colleagues in residency. This program is aimed at professional and emerging artists from any discipline who want to work on visual, sound or performance art research, or who wish to have a space for reflection to create, investigate or write.

Exploration Residencies may include an open studio format presentation or other possibilities opening up their process for the local public.

South Porch Artists Residency is a retreat space for working artists, scholars and clergy to pursue creative projects. Located on an historic property in downtown Summerville, SC, South Porch immerses residents in the evocative setting of a small Southern town, just half an hour from downtown Charleston. Up to six residents at a time are offered comfortable lodgings and studio work space, either in our 1835 Main House or contemporary Cottage Studio.
