Our National Emerging Artists Program is back! This 10-day residency is focused on emerging artists and/or small collaborative teams of all disciplines (literary, performing and visual arts) who wish to create among other emerging artists from around the USA.  The residency is focused on process over product; sharing works in progress is always optional. There is also time for play and rejuvenation - all in support of each artist’s goals, needs and interests. Lodging provided. We hope to provide additional stipends and travel support (this is grant dependent).

  • Reside in the US
  • Identify as emerging or early career artist
  • Be over the age of 18

William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center

MONTAUK, NY, United States

The Edward F. Albee Foundation exists to serve writers and visual artists from all walks of life, by providing time and space in which to work without disturbance.

Using only talent and need as the criteria for selection, the Foundation invites any and all artists to apply.

Founded in 1967 by Edward Albee, after proceeds from his play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? proved abundant, the Foundation has maintained the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center (better known as "The Barn") in Montauk, on Long Island in New York, as a residence for writers and visual artists.

The Center is open almost year-round and can accommodate four creative persons at a time. Residencies are for calendar-month periods (with rare, pre-approved exceptions). The standards for admission are, simply, talent and need.

Located approximately two miles from the center of  Montauk and the Atlantic Ocean, "The Barn" rests in a secluded knoll  which offers privacy and a peaceful atmosphere. The Foundation expects all those accepted for residence to work seriously and to conduct themselves in such a manner as to aid fellow residents in their endeavors.  Writers and visual artists are offered individual en-suite bedrooms and separate working studios. Residents are responsible for their food, travel, and other expenses. The environment is simple and communal.

L’AiR Arts Residency Program

Paris, France

L’AiR Arts is committed to supporting intercultural artistic exchange through international arts residency programs, while promoting diversity, inclusion and international understanding through artistic and cultural heritage. Just like L’AiR Arts historical base at Atelier 11, our residency program mirrors the symbol for equality = a horizontal exchange between artists and cultural professionals from various cultural backgrounds, of different ages and genders, working in various disciplines and at all stages of their professional careers.

L’AiR Arts residency program is supported by 4 main pillars:

  • intercultural exchange
  • research
  • professional development and;
  • contemporary creation

The purpose of L'AiR Arts multidisciplinary residency programs is to foster cross-cultural exchanges and collaborations between international artists and cultural professionals within the local art ecosystem. Located in Montparnasse, known as a historic hub for international artists in the beginning of the 20th century, the L’AiR Arts residency program grounds its commitment to contemporary arts within a historical perspective.

Focusing on intercultural artistic exchange as the legacy of the École de Paris, the program offers an insider’s view into the important role that international artists have played in Paris from the late 19th century to the present day.

Thanks to our current supporters, we are able to offer a number of funded and subsidized residencies, as well as fellowships to cover travel and/or material and research stipend.

Funded and subsidized residencies are limited and priority is given to candidates from less economically developed parts of the world based on the OECD’s DAC list, as well as artists at risk or in exile.

In addition, we accept submissions from candidates who are funded by other institutions and funders. The contributions help us to offset the costs of upkeep and preservation of the Atelier 11 historic residency, while also creating a nurturing and productive environment for the residents.

All selected candidates receive an invitation letter indicating the specific condition of their residency, which can be used to seek further funding from national and international agencies.

QHHQ Self-Guided Residency

Harpers Ferry, WV, United States

A retreat-style residency in the Quonset Hut Headquarters in Bakerton, WV.

At its most basic, a residency is a place for someone to live and work. What to work ON is determined by the resident.

The self-guided residency does not require any involvement with the community, any sort of exhibition or output, or even frequent interaction with your hosts.  It is self-catered, and no administrative help is included other than guiding potential residents towards possible funding sources (if needed) and connecting the resident to local resources.

Any specialized equipment needs, administrative help, exhibition or workshop assistance can be arranged for a fee.

Material needs must be provided by resident

Potential for collaboration with local community, exhibition in the Wayside Wondercabinet exhibition space, or other site-specific venues depending upon the project.

Our focus is on identifying and addressing the themes of rural transition—through participatory research with creatives and communities in the exurban environment of the Shenandoah Valley (Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland.) Our approach is simultaneously artist-initiated and community-driven.

Residents can be given production help and space, administrative assistance, networking opportunities, as well as guidance on local customs and issues relating to contemporary rural life.

Open to all artists, movers, scientists, farmers, historians, musicians, writers, journalists, filmmakers, and others.

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

Ideally, we would be able to accommodate all needs for those with limited mobility.  However, that is not possible given the circumstances.  We can spend considerable effort on describing the setting and trouble shooting possibilities for accessibility for those who have limited mobility.

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

The live/work studio is situated through a rocky, grassy yard (200 yards) after parking in a gravel driveway.  Once you arrive at the studio, there is a low wooden porch with a small "ramp".  The entry doors to the live/work studio are large glass door which swing out and must be opened and closed by hand.

The bathroom facilities (an outdoor treated rainwater shower and composting toilet) are not accessible via wheelchair.  The shower and toilet can be outfitted with stools, handles, and rails, but the space is confined and cannot accommodate devices larger than a cane.

The kitchenette has countertops which are 3.5" from the floor of the porch, so would be difficult to reach while sitting.

Wild Wonderful Rural Residencies

Harpers Ferry, WV, United States

V4L initiates and facilitates customized creative residencies across all disciplines. Our focus is on identifying and addressing the themes of rural transition—through participatory research with creatives and communities in the exurban environment of the Shenandoah Valley (Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland.) Our approach is simultaneously artist-initiated and community-driven.

Our program is multi-locational—meaning that we partner to build a network of hosting locations and interested communities in which residents may engage, based on the artist or collective’s intended work.

Residents are given production help and space, administrative assistance, networking opportunities, as well as guidance on local customs and issues relating to contemporary rural life. Open to all artists, movers, scientists, farmers, historians, musicians, writers, journalists, filmmakers, and others.

Farwell Cottage Residency

Harpers Ferry, WV, United States

Located in the historic town of Hillsboro, Virginia, the Farwell Cottage hosts 1-3 residents in the month of January every year. The focus of this residency is community engagement through various creative opportunities—including workshops, open studios, walks, talks, parades, or friendly waves from the front porch! Opportunities to participate in a Farwell Cottage Residency will be announced by an Open Call when applicable.

Preference is given to LGBTQIA+ artists, but all artists are considered.  Selection is based on whether the proposed work is relevant to the town and its community.   Projects which examine the history of the area (including racial and identity histories,) gardening, agriculture, geography, and community engagement are prioritized.

As a 18th-century building in a confined lot, the home is generally not accessible for artists with disabilities that limit mobility.

Participation as a speaker or panel-member for a salon-type presentation is required (Eat, Drink, and Be Literary Series) and comes with a stipend.  Open studio preferred.  Workshops and collaborations encouraged but not required.

Living space is a 18th century stone house with all amenities.  Depending upon the artist's proposed intention, there are space workspaces within the home and other workspace can be arranged outside of the living space.

There is NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION in this area and very minimal conveniences in the town itself, so a vehicle or other ride arrangement is required.
