Based on the advice of ACA, Manship has been engaged in a test-pilot period during which we have been inviting artists and others doing creative work, who have been recommended by our advisors.

2022 marks the year that Manship will begin the transition to open calls, with applicants being selected by juries and organizational partners.

We believe the land Tofte Lake Center sits on and the programs and opportunities we offer belong - and should be accessible to - artists of all genders, ages, abilities and racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds. We regard TLC as a home where all artists, arts supporters and audiences can touch the land, honor the ancestors, and through art become cultural stewards for the generations to come. We create community through personal and professional exploration of our ever-changing cultural dimensions: spiritual, political, economic, health and well-being, academic and, of course - art.

Application guidelines and the application form itself can be found on www.GoldenAppleStudio.com (click Art Residency, then Application Form). Acceptance into a two-week residency session is determined through a jury process and requires a written letter of intent (what work do you propose to do while in residence), a current CV and images or examples of your current work (can be directed to your website), in addition to the application form itself. Applications are accepted on an open-ended basis. Following notification of your acceptance, you will be sent a commitment form which must be signed and returned within 14 days, along with a deposit check of $300. This deposit holds your reservation as a scheduled resident and will be deducted from the cost of your residency. The deposit also serves as a commitment on your part and therefore, is non-refundable.

Partial scholarships are available and if provided, will be announced in your letter of acceptance. The amount of your scholarship will be deducted from your balance due. Payment in full (minus deposit and potential scholarship amounts) are due 60 days prior to the first day of your residency session.

Program Period
The fellowship residency period runs from July through June of the following year and includes one to nine months of studio residency at Kala Art Institute with 24/7 access to communal studio spaces, equipment, and resources.

Accommodations: Kala offers shared artist housing located across the street from Kala’s facilities. Kala has two, two-bedroom apartments and can house 4 artist-in-residence each month.  Please note that Kala’s shared artist apartments are 2 bedroom apartments, meaning you will be living with a roommate and sharing a kitchen, living room, and bathroom. The apartment cannot accommodate partners, co-parents, or children. There is a $200 non-refundable housing deposit which will be applied towards the residency costs. An alternative housing list is available that includes local community members who rent out space in their homes. In this case, artists are responsible for finding their housing.

Jentel awards residencies to artists, writers, and composers who are focused and serious about their practices. Residencies are intended to be professional development opportunities for visual artists in any medium; writers in fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry; and composers across musical genres. Proposals for self-directed residencies should be compatible with available studio spaces, facilities, and resources. Artistic merit and promise form the basis for selections. Mature as well as emerging artists are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be 25 years of age to be eligible for a residency. Applicants must also be US citizens or reside in the US during the year of the residency for which they are applying. Applicants in post-doc fellowships are eligible for a residency; students enrolled full-time (9 hours or more) in an academic program are not.

• Each resident receives a $300 stipend distributed in weekly installments to defray the cost of living and food expenses during the residency.
• The application fee is $30.
• A $100 reservation deposit is due one month after notification of the residency award and confirms the residency. The deposit is non-refundable if the reservation is cancelled less than two months before the residency starts.
• Aside from the application fee, there are no additional charges to attend the residency.

Jentel’s review panelists are visual art, literary, and music professionals who review and rate applications twice a year. Panelists are routinely rotated.

• Proposal: We believe our residency works best as a creative laboratory untied to outcome. We would like to hear about what makes you curious, what you are interested in investigating, and what your jumping off point would be. (200 words max)

• Optional question: We want to look at your work according to your definition of success. Are there additional criteria that you would like the panel/us to consider when reviewing your work? For example: What do you consider to be a successful piece or process? If you work with a community, the artistic product may not be the sole or most important creation of the work. Are there other impacts and creations in your process we should focus on? Please share any documentation that could bring us close to these impacts—interviews, testimony from participants, writing about the work, images from an event, etc.

Review

Artists-in-residence are selected by a review panel composed of the Wassaic Project Co-Directors, Director of Artistic Programming, and professionals in the field. Residents will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large.

Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program residents are selected annually based on merit from a competitive pool of applicants by a professional jury.

The program is open to professional visual artists, 21 years or older who live in the US, as well as US citizens or permanent residents living abroad. Applicants may not be enrolled in any degree program, participate in any other residency program, or maintain a separate studio during their residency.
