Additional Eligibility Information

CIAR's June residency accepts oil and watercolor painters of all levels to participate in a landscape painting workshop. The September residency accepts visual artists working in all mediums. We encourage applicants who will benefit from nature as a tool in their creative process, especially those who will use the unique natural environment of Cuttyhunk Island as their studios. Our facilities are conducive to artists with a portable studio practice, an ability to work on projects with easy set-up and break-down methods. Artists may also set up temporary work spaces on our large wraparound, covered porch overlooking Vineyard Sound. We also see this time as a way for artists to wander, think, and sketch. The beautiful nature trails and quiet beaches offer a sense of escape from our busy lives.

Examples of work methods supported by our facilities:

  • drawing
  • painting
  • collage
  • small sculpture projects (not needing special tools or shop space)
  • photography

Artist Residencies in Key West, FL

Key West, FL, United States

The Studios of Key West, the premier arts organization at the Southernmost Point of the United States, offers a residency program for emerging and established artists and writers from around the world. We provide residencies to visual artists, writers, composers, musicians, media artists, performers, and interdisciplinary artists.

The program grants nearly 35 artists each year the time and space to imagine new artistic work, engage in valuable dialogue and explore island connections. The Studios’ residency program is community-based and built upon the hope that visiting artists will take inspiration from Key West’s rich artistic past and present, and will engage with — and be inspired by — the remarkable people and culture that surrounds them.

Key West’s official motto, “One Human Family” reflects our commitment to living together as caring, sharing neighbors dedicated to making our home as close to paradise as we can. To that end, we encourage artists of all races, nationalities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities to apply. Residencies are almost a full month, and run from the 16th of the month through the 14th of the next. The newly renovated guest house has 4 artist residencies including 1 ADA-accessible unit, with a shared kitchen, covered courtyard and lushly landscaped grounds.

Hundreds of writers and artists have since come to Key West through the Peyton Evans Artist Residency (PEAR) Program, many returning and several relocating permanently.

The Studios of Key West is located at the former Scottish Rite Masonic Center at the corner of Simonton and Eaton Streets, renovated through generous donations in 2015. Built in 1951, it’s spacious, sturdy and suffused with light – an iconic piece of Miami Deco architecture located in the heart of downtown Key West, just one block from Duval Street.

This museum facility includes a 200 seat professional theater, museum galleries devoted to contemporary art, eight studios for practicing artists, and two dedicated classrooms. The rooftop, Hugh’s View, sits atop the three story building, providing space for outdoor programming such as concerts, plein air classes and more. The PEAR House, home of the Peyton Evans Artist Residencies program, is located just next door and recently underwent a $2M renovation. And most recently, The Studios acquired a woodshop space on Stock Island, a few miles north of the main campus, but with access to work tables, table saws and more, it's another way to provide working space to artists.

With dedicated creative spaces for exhibitions, performances, instruction and art making, and housing artist residencies, our facilities offer a cultural platform that lives up to Key West’s creative potential.

McColl Center Artist-in-Residence Program

Charlotte, NC, United States

The McColl Center's internationally acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program serves as a catalyst for growth for emerging and mid-career artists. McColl Center hosts three residency terms per year—fall, winter/spring, and summer, for four artists per term. An artist residency at McColl Center is a moment to think big, take risks in the creative process, and explore ideas within the context of Charlotte.

Artists-in-residence receive private housing adjacent to McColl Center, a large-scale private studio in our historic building in Uptown Charlotte, curatorial guidance, marketing and PR support, and a generous stipend. While in residency, our artists have the freedom to fully focus on artistic research, exploration, and creation while also engaging with McColl Center’s Igniters community and the local creative sector.

Aviário Studio Artist Book Residency

Ferreira do Zêzere, Portugal

An art residency provides the technical conditions, time, and space to develop ideas and try new approaches. It is a moment that promotes connection between artists from different backgrounds and consequently the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Aviário Studio Artist Book Residency aims to promote the exploration and production in the Artist Book field. Artist books are consensually understood as an object that takes the shape or the dynamics of a book, and is made by an artist. There are many ways to conceive a book, and given the multidisciplinary features of Aviário Studio, it is possible to pursue very distinct paths.

We offer the conditions to test possibilities and materialize ideas. On one hand, it can be a moment of transition, more connected to experimentation and research; on the other hand, it can be the point of consolidation of a project translated into the production of a new body of work.

The duration, focus and outcome of the residency is defined by the participating artist’s goals.

We charge $450 for a one-week residency and $900 for a two-week residency, including all meals and snacks, linens, and programming. We can provide transportation from points along the I-5 corridor (airports, Amtrak, bus stations, towns/addresses) between Portland, OR and Seattle, WA for a $25-30/fee each way.

Our fellowships cover the one-week ($450) or two-week ($900) residency fee, including room and board, and include transportation from within the Portland-to-Seattle corridor along I-5 (pickup/drop-off at airports, bus stations, Amtrak, your aunt's house), so the artist pays no fee other than getting to Portland/Western Washington.

We have one fellowship which provides a larger travel stipend -- from $125 to $400 -- and that is the Erin Donovan Writing Fellowship.

Additional Accessibility Information

Depending on an artist's mobility, we are not 100% accessible. The main school building is single story and has a ramp entry as well as disabled parking. The 9-foot wide halls and smooth floors are fine for those with walkers and wheelchairs. Most doors (to your studio room, in and out of the dining room, to and from the deck) are 36 inches wide, but doors into the bathrooms are narrower and not accessible-width for all wheelchairs (travel wheelchairs have worked, and these should be fine for a walker). To shower you will need to be able to step into or otherwise get over the shower pan's raised rim. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have concerns about accessibility; we have hosted residents who have maneuvered easily in travel wheelchairs and with walkers, as well as residents who have brought caregivers who share a room with them (rooms have two queen beds apiece).

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

Most of residency takes place inside the main school building, so it should be accessible. Everything is on one story, including the common area where residents and visiting artists present.

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

The entry doors to the bathrooms in the main school building are narrower ("in" and "out" doors with a column between them). Before a resident who is dependent on a wheelchair comes, we'd like to send dimensions/photos and discuss if we can work for them.

The Whirlybird Compound Artist in Residency of Acadiana

Opelousas, LA, United States

The purpose of The Whirlybird Compound Artist in Residency of Acadiana, run by Christy Leichty and Jim Phillips, is to enhance the creative process of artists through cultural immersion.

Christy & Jim provide 6 artist in residence accommodations in a secluded and inspiring setting in South Louisiana, complete with a residence, studio spaces, gallery, performance spaces, kitchen, laundry and basic amenities, allowing artists to fully immerse themselves in the unique cultural experiences and traditions of the region.

Artists are responsible for their own food and transportation, Christy & Jim offer weekly shopping trips for those without vehicles and spontaneous cultural and artistic events. Artists are expected to follow the The Whirlybird Compound rules, which are simple: no pets, no non-working partners, no indoor smoking, and no alterations to the property. Christy & Jim offer a unique opportunity for paying it forward which they call Community Lagniappe (in Cajun and Creole culture, lagniappe is a small gift given or obtained by way of good measure) – where the artists are expected to contribute to the community through a project, such as a reading, a workshop, a recital/gig/jam or an art show. Lagniappe does not have to be complicated or a major focus of the residency, simple contributions are preferred.  And, we love to have feedback at the end of the residency.

Residencies of 4-6 weeks or more are preferred, but shorter stays of up to 1 week will be considered

Additional Eligibility Information

The Whirlybird Compound Artist Residency Program invites professional and emerging artists of all disciplines to apply starting Feb 15th, 2023 for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Residencies of 4-6 weeks or more are preferred and can be for up to 12 weeks, but shorter stays of a minimum of 1 week will be considered for certain circumstances, but not encouraged.

Although our accommodations offer six private bedrooms, we will not always have six artists in residency at the same time. We will collaborate with the applying artists and prioritize balancing their needs with our program's requirements. The number of residents at any given time, as well as the specific accommodations requested, will also be taken into account.

Y’all, we’re old school, so application materials should be sent via email to thewhirlybird@gmail.com (for large digital media files, use Box or Dropbox – or old fashion snail mail for “hard copy” to 4072 Hwy 182, Opelousas, LA 70570). There is no fee to apply.

To successfully apply for a residency at The Whirlybird Compound, it’s important to showcase your passion for your work – tell us why you’re seeking this opportunity. Detail what you hope to achieve during the residency and how the program will support your growth as an artist. Your portfolio should be well-organized, visually appealing, and easy to navigate, featuring high-quality images or recordings of your work along with relevant information such as dimensions, materials, and creation dates. Residency at The Whirlybird Compound requires artists to contribute to the community through a project like a reading, workshop, presentation or art show, so be specific about your goals and plans and explain how the residency will support your project. Please obtain letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your work who can speak to your abilities and the residency. Submit all required materials in a timely fashion and double-check everything before submitting. And, it is appropriate to follow up with the residency program after submission to inquire about the status of your application, of course, being respectful and professional in your inquiry.

Application Requirements:

  1. Letter of Intent: This document should include your personal information (address, phone, and email), your background in art, your goals for the residency, letters of recommendation, desired residency dates, and preferred accommodations.
  2. Resume and Portfolio: Your resume should highlight your background and experience in your field. Your portfolio should showcase your work and be well-organized, visually appealing, and easy to navigate. If you are a writer, include published works or works in progress. If you are an artist, musician, or dancer, include 3-5 images, recordings, or videos of your work.
  3. The Community Lagniappe (LAN-yap) Proposal (in Cajun and Creole culture, lagniappe is a small gift given or obtained by way of good measure): In the spirit of paying it forward, we expect applicants to contribute to the community through a project we call Community Lagniappe, such as a reading, workshop, presentation, or art show. This does not have to be complicated or a major focus of the residency, simple contributions are preferred.

Finalists will be invited for an interview (via Zoom or Skype or regular old phone call) within a couple of weeks of submitting the application. Acceptance notifications will be sent within 30 days – or earlier if the request for residency is before 30 days from applying. A 50% deposit is required for confirmation of residency and must be made within 10 days of acceptance. A 5.5% St. Landry Parish occupancy tax will be added.

  • Cancellation Policy: A $100 fee will be deducted from the deposit if canceled before 30 days before the start date. Refunds for cancellations within 30 days depend on a medical emergency or finding a replacement.

Again, our accommodations offer six independent and unique bedrooms, but we will not necessarily have six artists in residency at any given time. We will work with the artists as they apply and try to balance their needs with those of our program, taking into consideration the number of residents and the location of their accommodations at any given time.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND COSTS

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

Artists with limited mobility can participate in various aspects of the residency experience, depending on their level of independence and their need for accessibility features. It would be important to consider whether they require wheelchair access to toilet and shower facilities, as well as whether they have their own transportation or need assistance with travel. Depending on the specific needs of the individual, they may be able to participate in some or all of the program's offerings, such as using the studio spaces, attending cultural events, or utilizing the available accommodations. It would be helpful for the program to have an open line of communication with interested artists in order to assess and accommodate their individual needs as best as possible.

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

The private Folkart Barn (a vacation rental), along with a private residence, share the 5-acre property and are not accessible. However, there are many accessible areas within the large structures on the property, such as the accommodations, studio spaces, gallery, performance spaces, kitchen, and laundry facilities.
