Guest Artists Space Foundation

Oniru, Lagos, Nigeria

Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation is a Nigerian non-profit founded in 2019 by Yinka Shonibare CBE RA and an esteemed board of Directors. It delivers residency and public programmes across two sites located in Lagos and Ijebu. The multi-use live/work spaces host multidisciplinary artists, researchers and curators from all over the world in awarded residencies for up to three months.

In Lagos, the Foundation is hosted in an award-winning building designed by Elsie Owusu in collaboration with Nihinlola Shonibare. The secondary location designed by Papa Omotayo sits on a 54-acre working farm owned by Shonibare located on the outskirts of Ikise, a village neighbouring Ijebu-Ode. The farm produces crops ranging from yams and cassava to peppers and cashew.

The Foundation’s mission is underpinned by an ethos that strives to create a platform for creative and career development and knowledge exchange. Through the support of international partnerships, G.A.S. hopes to break down traditional barriers of privilege, wealth and lack of infrastructure and provide opportunities for both its residents and the local community.

In 2022, G.A.S. began populating its library archive after receiving a donation from Professor John Picton and Sue Picton of a lifelong personal library collection, consisting of around 1500 volumes. The donated books cover topics including Sub-Saharan African art, history, and archaeology, as well as African American and Black British arts.

Hypatia-in-the-Woods Residency

Holly House in Hypatia's woods

Holly House in Hypatia's woods

Hypatia-in-the-Woods Residency

Shelton, WA, United States

We offer solo residencies of 1-3 weeks in a well-appointed cottage in deep woods above Hammersley Inlet on Puget Sound. The cottage is five miles from Shelton, a small logging town. Residents are responsible for their own transportation to Holly House, and preparing their own food. The small kitchen has a two-burner countertop stove, under-counter refrigerator, broiler oven, microwave, and coffeemaker. A loft bedroom has writing/drawing space, and there is a pull-out sofa bed downstairs for those who do not want to have to use stairs.

The cottage has a ramped entry and spacious bathroom, but is not fully ADA compliant, and the grounds are not particularly wheelchair-friendly. Residents with some disabilities are welcome to bring a helper by arrangement with the board. We are a small nonprofit, and a working board; there is no staff. However, volunteers provide clean linens; we ask residents to spend a few hours at the end of their stay cleaning the house for the next resident.

The place is good accommodation for writers, visual artists, academics, playwrights and artists in other fields. There is decent wifi through a sharing arrangement with the next-door neighbors. There are paths in the woods and great hiking and saltwater access nearby. Residents are required to have a vehicle on the premises for their own safety in case of evacuation orders.

Additional Accessibility Information

While we have a ramped entry and spacious bathroom, there are many barriers to accessibility: a ledge in the shower entry, an upstairs bedroom, a microwave that requires standing to use, grounds that are undeveloped with only trails and a gravel driveway. Residents with mild mobility issues have managed well and we offer the opportunity to bring a helper.

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

Since the residency is a solo one, there is no programming, so this does not really apply.

Azule: Mountainside Artist Residency

Hot Springs, NC, United States

As an emerging community-based organization, Azule has developed a retreat and residency program for craftspeople, writers, architects, builders, researchers, and artists of all types. Azule’s mission is to provide an environment where artists and community meet, work, and learn together through the arts in their many forms. Located in Western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, our facility is the result of decades of work by local craftspeople, using predominantly locally harvested or reused materials and constructed with traditional techniques.

Residents are each provided a room (shared or private) with a bed, work space, and beautiful views of our Appalachian setting. The remainder of the structure is communal and includes a full kitchen, dining area, library, and various side rooms and open spaces that serve as work space, gathering space, and studio space as needed.

We invite residents to join us to enjoy a retreat from everyday life where there is time and space to relax, dream, and create. We now accept and process applications on an ongoing basis throughout the year.

The actual cost of each residency is $5,000 per month, which includes a semi-private studio, private bedroom, full use of our facilities, visiting artist program, studio visits, insurance, and staff support. In an effort to serve and support emerging artists, we attempt to subsidize residencies for all individual artists who do not have other forms of support. Thanks to the generous support of donors and grants, the artist’s contribution for the winter residency program is $900 per a 4-week period.

We also offer need-based financial assistance to artists-in-residence for whom it would be impossible to attend without financial support. Financial need is self-reported by artists in their applications. We ask that artists who are in a position to fully contribute towards the residency fee please do so.

Rock Street Artist Residency

Rock Street Artist Residency

Marquette , MI, United States

The mission of Rock Street Artist Residency is to create an environment where all artists are welcome. A place to explore, contemplate and share ideas, without judgement empowering the creative spirit in its many forms creating vibrant artistic community.

RSAR emphasizes the human experience and the creative process. Life is a creative journey and consider every moment a part of the process. New experiences stimulate creativity and revitalize the creative mind.  For this reason, our residency is self-motivated.

RSAR is a Victorian home that was built in 1887, the first farm on Rock Street. It was a farm and smokehouse that brought fresh eggs, smoked fish and poultry to the steam ships that visited Marquette harbor. It is a unique environment, offering artists a place with limited distraction, equipped studio spaces, quality food and an abundance of natural inspiration and only two blocks from the largest freshwater lake in the world.

Our residency program welcomes artists and writers working across all mediums and genres for two-and three-week sessions.
